Stearman's Honour

Posted on: Thu 26 Aug 2010

Richard Stearman admits it was "an honour" to skipper Wolves for the first time in Tuesday's lengthy Carling Cup success over Southend.

And the Wolverhampton-born defender made it a real captain's innings by popping up with the decisive winner a minute into injury time after two hours of football.

As Stearman continues his battle for a place in Wolves Barclays Premier League side, he has also set his sights on hopefully wearing the armband again in the future.

"It was an honour to captain Wolves for the first time," says the 23-year-old.

"It was also the first time I've captained any team in a competitive game in my career.

"I thoroughly enjoyed it and hopefully will have the chance to do it again.

"These games are never easy.

"We were very much the favourites and teams from the lower leagues always come here and see Wolves as a scalp.

"They see it as a chance to impress and show what they can do but fortunately we are into the next round.

"It was always going to be different because there were so many changes to the team.

"The gaffer was pleased just to get through to the next round."

Another major positive for the boss was the performances of the three Development players, all of whom were making their first senior starts.

Danny Batth impressed alongside Stearman - and completed the full game - while Sam Winnall and Ashley Hemmings were bright up front before being withdrawn for the big guns Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Kevin Doyle.

"I thought the three young lads did excellently," added Stearman.

"The two up top did really well and Sam won the penalty for our first goal.

"Danny saw out the whole two hours and also did well - it was good to see the three of them get their chance I think they all took it.

"We've seen some players come through the Academy previously at Wolves.

"There's a great set-up here with some great coaches and there's more talent in there waiting to get their chance as well."

The Wolves players congratulate Stearman

Stearman meanwhile is no stranger to late goals having notched an historic first for Wolves in injury time against Doncaster on the final day of the Championship-winning season of 2008/09.

His other Wolves goal came shortly after the interval against Hull last season.

"I was about a yard out so I'd have done well to miss it!" he said of Tuesday's winner.

"I left it a bit late and we could all have done with it sooner - maybe the 89th minute rather than the 121st!

"Doyler has tried to claim it but it's definitely mine.

"Thankfully we're through to the next round."
