Guedioura: Time To Tackle Southend

Posted on: Tue 24 Aug 2010

Adlene Guedioura is ready to move on from THAT tackle - and focus all his attentions on making a successful Carling Cup debut against Southend tonight.

Guedioura was one of the stars of the show in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Everton, making a hugely impressive impact as a second half substitute and playing a major part in Sylvan Ebanks-Blake's crucial equaliser.

His block tackle on Everton's Johnny Heitinga in the build-up to the goal prompted one or two murmurs from the Toffee fraternity - none it has to be said from manager David Moyes - and the Algerian international believes it was hard but fair.

"I was pleased with my impact on Saturday," said Guedioura.

"The team worked very hard for the draw and by the end we were going for the win.

"Even so a draw at Everton is a very good result.

"For our goal I did try and flick the ball when it came across but it went through to Sylvan which was good - I was happy for him to get the goal and happy for the team we got a point.

"As to the tackle I think it was a good one and part of football.

"The referee said it was o-k and I'm not thinking about it anymore - I'm looking forward to tonight's game."

Boss Mick McCarthy has gone public to say he will ring the changes at Molineux this evening (kick off 7.45pm), and that could hand Guedioura his first start of the season.

"I always have to improve whether in training or whether in a match," he added.

"If I start the game tonight I hope I will play well.

"It would be good for us to go as far as we can in the Carling Cup.

"We have very good competition for places through the team and the game will give players the chance to play.

"Competition is good because if someone loses some form there is always someone else to come in."

After Southend comes the no small matter of Saturday's return to Barclays Premier League action against a Newcastle side buoyed by thrashing Aston Villa 6-0 on Sunday.

Guedioura believes Wolves are better prepared for such battles due to their added top flight experience, but doesn't want to look beyond this evening's tie.

"Every game is different," he says.

"Newcastle won with a big scoreline against Aston Villa but we will be at home and need to make the most of that.

"It will be a tough game but we'll be ready for the battle.

"I think we are stronger than last year and have more experience as well as some good signings.

"We are full of confidence but every game is difficult and we need to be focused at all times.

"And we must stay focused especially in a game like tonight."
