Nothing Personal!

Posted on: Mon 23 Aug 2010

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake was quick to deflect any personal plaudits after his crucial goal to help Wolves to a point at Everton - insisting the team is all that matters.

The in-form striker notched his third Barclays Premier League goal at Goodison Park, ironically all of which have come as equalisers in 1-1 draws.

It will have done him no harm in what looks like being an intense battle for places in Wolves' striking department, but the 24-year-old is looking beyond his own personal situation.

"I hate talking about myself and it's not about what I've got to prove - it's about what we as a team have got to prove," he said.

"We want to show we can play in the Premier League and stay at this level and consolidate and build from here.

"That's all that matters and it's not about individuals.

"I love scoring goals - everyone who knows me knows that.

"But it gives confidence to the whole team, not just me.

"And that comes from getting four points from the first two games as well.

"We showed what we can do by battling back from a goal down at Goodison Park and not many teams would do that."

And when it comes to targets, Ebanks-Blake's approach is simple.

"I just want to stay fit and play as many minutes as I can," he added.

"This time last year I was injured and so it's important for me to stay fit.

"I was out for six weeks and never had the chance to build any momentum.

"I want to try and stay in the team but we've got good competition in my position and the whole squad.

"I just want to stay fit and contribute to helping the team stay in the Premier League.

"We're not getting carried away, we are trying to consolidate and become a Premier League team.

"The only way we can do that is by continuing to work hard and stick together

Wolves looked a different team in the second period and the more likely winners in the closing stages, in stark contrast to the opening 45 minutes when they were given the runaround by a lively Everton team.

Ebanks-Blake admitted however it was difficult to suggest anything other than a draw as a fair result!

The second half introduction of Adlene Guedioura played a key role in Wolves' improvement, taken as a sign of how the squad has developed over the last year.

"Addy was different class when he came on," said Ebanks-Blake.

"He battled and broke up play for us and played a massive part in the goal.

"That's why the gaffer makes the changes and that is the sort of players we've got waiting in the wings.

"We're probably a better squad this year for the experiences we had last season and for the new players coming in as well.

"We've had a very good start and come out of the blocks very strong.

"We've had a season in the league and are better players for it and are delighted with four points out of six."
