By George! New Deal For Elokobi

Posted on: Fri 20 Aug 2010

Defender George Elokobi has today put pen to paper on a new three-year contract to extend his Molineux stay until 2013.

And Wolves also have the option for a fourth year for the Cameroon-born 24-year-old.

Elokobi had 12 months remaining on his previous deal, which had already been extended from the two-and-a-half year contract signed when he joined Wolves from Colchester in January, 2008.

The new deal marks another chapter in the Elokobi story which began with non-league outfit Dulwich Hamlet and has now seen the left back go on to ply his trade in the Barclays Premier League.

On this very weekend two years ago he suffered a career-threatening cruciate knee ligament injury but made a remarkable recovery to actually come on as a substitute on the final day of the Championship-winning season against Doncaster.

And it was this weekend last year that he made his Premier League bow, producing a typically powerful and unflustered performance after coming on at half time of the narrow defeat to Manchester City.

Boss Mick McCarthy today labelled Elokobi's recovery as "inspirational".

"I'm absolutely delighted that George has earned himself a new contract which is a credit to his sheer hard work and determination," said Mick.

"He's come back from a career threatening injury and got back on the last day of the season we were promoted.

"He then contributed to our survival in the Barclays Premier League.

"George is such a great character around the place and is an inspiration to anyone who ever gets injured in terms of how he has come back.

"He is a really valued and respected member of the squad and I'm delighted to have him signed up.

"He's got better and better and has just got a great desire to improve all the time."

Elokobi was battling it out with Stephen Ward for the left back spot last season, finishing the campaign strongly and in total chalking up 17 league starts and five appearances as substitute.

He came off the bench shortly after half time in last weekend's opening day win against Stoke, and with Jelle Van Damme a doubt will again be in contention for tomorrow's trip to Everton.

"We're very pleased to have another of our players signed up for three more years," said CEO Jez Moxey.

"As I've always said, contract management is a key part of our strategy at Wolves and we always aim to ensure that those players who have performed well have their futures secured.

"It's fantastic to see how far George has come in his career and at 24, there is the prospect that he still has more improvement to come.

"Mick has been keen to build up competition for places all over the pitch, and George will undoubtedly be battling it out for that left back spot."
