Boss Welcomes Striker Dilemma

Posted on: Tue 17 Aug 2010

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has welcomed the prospect of having all his frontline strikers fit for duty at Everton on Saturday - admitting any "pecking order" in terms of selection will be decided by their performances.

Steven Fletcher is undergoing treatment on his injured foot but has a good chance of being available for Goodison Park, while Kevin Doyle returned to training yesterday after missing Saturday's opening game of the season with a calf problem.

Jelle Van Damme is also undergoing treatment for an ankle problem which curtailed his impressive competitive debut against Stoke.

"Jelle got a knock and we will see how he is," said Mick.

"It's the same with Fletch, but we're confident he will be okay."

With Doyle back in training, and Fletcher available, there should be a fair old scramble for striking places with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Andy Keogh.

"If they (Fletcher/Doyle) are both okay then they will be in contention for Saturday.

"But Sylvan played very well on Saturday and has had a great pre-season.

"I go back to the start of the season last year and there were eight changes to the side that finished the season.

"There may well be a preferred pecking order at some stage but that only changes from players and their performance.

"I have to have a preferred 11 at the start of the season  -such as the 11 who started, without Kightly, Murray and Doyle being fit. I can only pick players who are fit."

Mick continued:  "I expect the same desire from everyone.

"It might be that the 11 who started the season turn out to be brilliant throughout the season but that's unlikely.

"You'll get injuries, people not playing well.

"I want them to push each other, whether they're wingers, goalkeepers, strikers, defenders, full-backs, etc. I want the ones out the team to be pushing those in the team."

Speculation continues with Wolves being linked with various players in addition to today's signing of young striker Jake Cassidy who is destined for the Development Squad.

The boss has re-iterated that player movement will depend on interest in his own fringe players first.

He added:  "There might still be players to go but it's dependent on a lot of things including whether somebody comes in for someone and whether it's a symbiotic deal which suits all parties.

"But there are no plates spinning either in or out at the moment."
