Jones Targeting Future Free Kicks

Posted on: Mon 16 Aug 2010

Wolves' man of the moment David Jones hopes Saturday's spectacular strike against Stoke will be the first of a few more free kicks that find the net.

The creative midfielder possesses plenty of quality for set pieces and that came to the fore with the flick-up and volley beyond Thomas Sorensen to open the scoring in the weekend's 2-1 win.

Understandably the goal was lauded far and wide this weekend - former England skipper Rio Ferdinand labeled it the best skill of the week on his twitter site* - but Jones believes it should have come sooner!

"I've been working on it," he said.

"I've struck a few like that from the wings but I haven't had many opportunities to shoot from the edge of the box like that.

"I always practise them so it was nice to see one come off.

"It was perfect really because from that distance, it's very hard to get the ball up and down with the wall.

"If I wanted to score, the volley was one of the few options I could take and I knew I could do that because you can keep the direction flat when you flick it up.

"I was delighted to see it come off.

"I've got good technique on them and hopefully, I'll get a few more opportunities to score from them because I have got a good free kick in me and I feel I can score more goals from them."

The free kick has also drawn comparisons with the famous Ernie Hunt/Willie Carr 'donkey drop' of 1970 for Coventry, while Match of the Day likened it to an effort from Matt Le Tissier at Southampton.

Jones will be heading for the Internet and You Tube to locate footage  of the 'Donkey Drop' - "I'm sure my Dad's seen it", he said with a smile.

But on the game itself, the Wolves midfielder was "delighted" with the overall team performance as the Molineux Men won on the season's opening weekend for the first time since 1999.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game because both games against them last season were," he added.

"It started off in a similar way with them throwing everything at us for 10 minutes.

"But we weathered the storm, got to grips with the game and our football shone through in the end.

"We imposed our game on them - we couldn't allow them to dictate the tempo.

"They like to get it in the box so they can use their big, powerful players.

"That's their style of play and how they like to do it and it's been very effective in keeping them in the Premier League for the last two years - and achieving survival early on too.

"They've been a very good team for the last two years and the manager wanted us to dictate the tempo as the home team.

"After the first 10 minutes, all of us were sharp - we got to grips with them and played some really good football."

In the wake of the victory Jones was asked about his contract situation after last week's story that he and Wolves had been unable to agree an extension to a deal which has 12 months to run.

Discussions remain amicable, and the midfielder is hopeful the situation will be resolved.

"I'd love to get it sorted," he confirmed.

"I live locally, five minutes from the training ground, I like the area, I like the club, the manager has told me he wants me to stay so there's definitely a chance and I'm still optimistic.

"There are a few sticking points, but it's a long process - I don't think there's a major problem and hopefully it will get sorted.

"Playing like that, people might say it's a bargaining tool for the contract but I always give 100 per cent anyway and I hope people saw that on Saturday.

"Even though the contract talks were in the press the last few days, it hasn't affected me at all.

"It just makes me hungry to want to stay at this club.

"This is club is going to progress.
