Keogh Strike Wins Friendly

Posted on: Sat 31 Jul 2010

Cheltenham Town 0

Wolves 1 (Keogh 28)

An Andy Keogh goal was all that separated Wolves and a plucky Cheltenham Town side at the end of what was a thoroughly entertaining contest at Whaddon Road.

There was an early chance for Marley Watkins who jinked past three challenges and was lining up a pot at goal when Brian McGroary ran across to boot clear.

Former Molineux midfielder JJ Melligan had to receive lengthy treatment after taking a clearance from Matt Hill full in the face.

Danny Andrew was harshly penalised for obstructing Sam Winnall just outside the Wolves box but Nenad Milijaš's free-kick curled a yard over the angle.

A moment's hesitation between Andy Gallinagh and Town keeper Daniel Lloyd-Weston allowed Geoffrey Mujangi-Bia to intercept. But he was forced wide and when he tried to find the net from an acute angle, Gallinagh got across to block at the expense of a corner.

Steven Mouyokolo, playing his first game for Wolves, was looking comfortable and twice in a minute he headed clear crosses as Cheltenham threatened.

Josh Klein-Davies tried a shot from 25-yards but the ball went straight to Marcus Hahnemann, and at the other end Sam Vokes fired high over the bar with a shot on the turn after taking a pass from Milijaš.

Wolves moved ahead in the 28th minute through Keogh after McGroary had slipped a pass inside to him. Keogh picked his spot and stroked the ball past Lloyd-Weston from 20-yards out (pictured).

Three minutes later Milijaš almost got a second with a sweetly struck volley from fully 30-yards out that flew narrowly wide.

Lloyd-Weston almost gifted Wanderers a goal when he allowed a drive from Vokes to slip from his grasp but, luckily for the keeper, the ball went behind for a corner rather than into the net.

Just before the break Scott Malone curled a free-kick into the Town box and Vokes ran in to power a header just inches over the bar.

Half-Time: Town 0 Wolves 1

Three minutes after the resumption Lloyd-Weston pulled off a tremendous reflex save to turn over a powerful header from Vokes who had run onto a well delivered cross from Malone.

It took a fine save at the other end to maintain Wolves' advantage with Hahnemann saving at a low drive from Melligan at his near post.

Milijaš danced past four tackles as he ran into the Town area but his shot was blocked by a defender, before Nathan Rooney replaced David Davis for the final quarter of the game.

There was a let off for Wolves and Hahnemann after the keeper 'lost' a 20-yard shot from David Bird. Brian Smikle grabbed possession and from an angle his shot rolled along the line and hit the far post with Jake Lee's follow up being deflected over.

In the 70th minute Danny Batth replaced Mouyokolo who had done little wrong with the small contingent of Wolves supporters applauding him from the field.

Lee went close with a header after a cross from Watkins before Hahnemann pulled off a tremendous double save from another former Wolf - Keith Lowe.

The American keeper somehow managed to knock down Lowe's initial header and then recovered to turn over the second effort from the defender after the ball had bounced back to him.

The League Two side almost grabbed an equaliser through Lee but his header from Klein-Davies's centre was wide of the post.
