Treble Tops For Boss

Posted on: Mon 26 Jul 2010

Mick McCarthy has paved the way for a three-way battle for Wolves' left back slot between Jelle Van Damme, George Elokobi and Stephen Ward.

And, in customary fashion, the boss says the position will be occupied for the first game of the season:  "by whoever is playing the best."

Van Damme has made an impressive start to life with Wolves during the pre-season friendlies, and started Saturday's 2-1 friendly defeat of Charleroi in a first competitive return to his native Belgium.

Ward, who played left midfield on Saturday, showed last season he can perform in the Barclays Premier League particularly considering he was playing through the pain barrier as did Elokobi, who finished the campaign strongly.

Elokobi was unavailable to travel to Belgium due to the regulations concerning his visa, but Mick is relishing the three-way tussle which should bring the best out of his trio of potential full backs.

"The best player will play at left-back - whoever that might be, whether it's George, Ward or Jelle," says the boss.

"I always tell all the players that the team that played against West Ham in the first game of last season was completely different to the one that finished the season.

"Jelle is doing very well and we're all very pleased with him, firstly as a person, which is very important to our club, and secondly as a player, which is vitally important to the team.

"He's very good technically and I believe the manner in which he plays the game is like an English-based Premier League player.

"He's very competitive and he's fitted in very well - he's a good member of the group."

The boss also explained Elokobi's absence from the travelling party for the weekend, linked to his status as an overseas player.

"It's the ridiculous nature of having to get a visa when he works in one European country but couldn't travel to another," he added.

"We went to Ireland so he got his visa to travel there, but he needed a week to get his visa for Belgium and there wasn't enough time.

"We couldn't get him a visa for both countries - I don't understand the rules, it's as complicated as the offside trap.

"It's strange that he lives and plays in Europe and yet he needs a visa to travel to another European country.

"Maybe it's a rule because he's from Cameroon - I don't know.

"But we couldn't get them both - we could have said he wouldn';t go to Ireland, but that was a four-day training camp and this was just one game.

"Jelle and Wardy were available and we had Matt Hill as well so we were covered.

"So it just gave George a weekend off, but he's worked hard and he's fine - he's great, a fantastic character and he's a really good player for me."

Geoffrey Mujangi Bia travelled to Belgium for the game against his parent club but was unavailable to feature due to a tight hamstring while Wayne Hennessey missed out with a back strain which saw Marcus Hahnemann quickly back into the travelling party.
