Sam Vokes is relishing the scramble for places in the Wolves striking department as he gears up for a potentially "massive season".
The youngest of the frontline quartet competing for one of the striking berths, Vokes did his cause no harm at all with a promising display alongside Sylvan Ebanks-Blake last night, grabbing a brace as Wolves dispatched Walsall 4-0 at the Banks's Stadium.
The pair are vying with joint record signings Kevin Doyle and Steven Fletcher in an intense battle for places, but it's one Vokes is looking forward to.
"I want to be in the squad and in and around the strikers competing for places," he said.
"Steven Fletcher has come in and Kevin Doyle had a great season last time, so I just want to compete for a place.
"Hopefully I can get a few games in the Premier League.
"We've got some strong players as we saw last night - Sylvan got a goal, Fletcher scored one at the weekend and everyone knows what Doyle can do.
"There's a lot of competition but that's the thing about the squad at the moment everyone's competing for a place.
"It's an encouraging sign - we've got four strikers competing for two places at the start of the season so I want to give myself as good an opportunity as I can to get one of those two places.
"If it's scoring goals that does that, then hopefully it will help."
Although there are likely to be times next season when the boss utilizes the one up front option which served Wolves so well last season, Mick has already suggested he still prefers to play 4-4-2 whenever possible.
And that formation gives more hope to a target man striker in the mould of Vokes.
"It was hard last season when we had five or six strikers competing for one place," he admitted.
"But if he plays two up front, then it's another place up for grabs.
"Hopefully I can try to establish myself and get into the side.
"It's a massive season for me - it's one where I want to play as many games as possible in the Premier League and hopefully score goals along the way.
"Playing those 10 games on loan at Leeds last season helped my game enormously and hopefully I can bring that into this season."
