Hennessey: Five More Years

Posted on: Mon 05 Jul 2010

Wolves have secured the long-term future of Welsh international keeper Wayne Hennessey who has put pen to paper on a new five-year contract.

Hennessey had two years remaining on his previous contract, but has now committed himself to Molineux until the summer of 2015 thanks to the new long-term deal.

Boss Mick McCarthy is delighted to have secured Hennessey's services in a goalkeeping department already well-stocked with the quality of Marcus Hahnemann, Carl Ikeme and Matt Murray.

"I'm delighted that Wayne has signed his new contract," said the boss.

"We are blessed to have three very good goalkeepers at the club who are currently fit and battling for the position and Wayne is somebody who I believe is a top class young keeper who will also get better.

"This is really good news for the club to have secured one of its best young players and one who will be keen to play a big part in the future. "

Hennessey arrived at Wolves from Manchester City as a 16-year-old and emerged through the Academy to sign his first professional contract in 2005.

It was during a loan spell with Stockport in early 2007 that he started his senior career in spectacular fashion, keeping a record-breaking nine consecutive clean sheets as Stockport won every one of the games.

It paved the way for him to step in for the injured Matt Murray for Wolves' 2007 play-off semi finals with West Bromwich Albion, after which he enjoyed an excellent 2007/08 campaign.

An ever present in the league, he kept 19 clean sheets and was voted Wolves' Player of the Year as well as being named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.

He then played in 34 of the 46 league games as Wolves won the Championship title and made 13 appearances after starting as first choice in the Barclays Premier League last season.

With 25 Welsh caps to his name already, Hennessey is still only 23 years of age with the potential to have his best years still very much ahead of him.

"We are very pleased to have secured Wayne's services for another five years," said Wolves CEO Jez Moxey.

"We have always said we pay very close attention to contract management with our players, and Wayne is one of the Club's three excellent goalkeepers to have emerged from the Academy.

"Marcus Hahnemann came in last season and did extremely well when given his opportunity, but Wayne is a young goalkeeper who will get better and will no doubt be pushing hard to regain his place.

"It is good news for everyone concerned that we have secured the long-term future of another of our talented young players."
