Losing The 'Wow' Factor

Posted on: Sat 03 Jul 2010

Matt Jarvis believes the Barclays Premier League won't have the same 'wow' factor for Wolves this season - but for all the right reasons.

While the fleet-footed winger insists there was certainly no fear involved for Wolves as they headed into last season, he admits the top flight did take a bit of getting used to.

So while next season is sure to prove just as tough given the quality of personnel on show, Jarvis believes Wolves can benefit from previous knowledge of life in the fast lane.

He says:  "When we first got into the league last season, for the first few weeks everyone was a bit like 'wow' - we're here lining up against all the big boys.

"But pretty quickly you realise you can't be phased by that and know that's it 11 against 11.

"After that we enjoyed the challenge and came out of it really well.

"This season could well be even harder but we've got that experience now and know not to be afraid of anyone.

"We weren't afraid of anyone last season, but now we know exactly what it's about and what to expect.

"The first priority is to survive and if that's achieved then it's about doing better than last season.

"With the squad we've got now then I think we are definitely capable of surviving again."

Jarvis enjoyed an impressive first season at Premier League level, not only featuring in 34 of the 38 league goals but also chipping in with three goals in the league and another in the FA Cup.

And quality from the wings is something the manager will certainly be looking for again next time around, not least with the likes of Michael Kightly and Stephen Hunt also expected back again during the early part of the campaign.

"In every position there is competition for places and I am sure that whoever is playing the best or training the best will get the nod," adds Jarvis.

"I think that will make the team better.

"We'll all be wanting to play - as soon as you get the shirt you want to keep it and will do everything you can to make sure you stay in the team.

"As soon as you get a bit of competition you have to drive yourself forward even more to make sure you improve and keep your place.

"I was delighted with my performances in my first Premier League season and the amount of games I played and hopefully I can do as well this time."
