Special Feature: He Comes From Serbia

Posted on: Fri 11 Jun 2010

After a year plying his trade with Wolves in the Barclays Premier League, Nenad Milijaš would be delighted if England make substantial progress at the forthcoming World Cup.

Just as long as it's not at the expense of Serbia!

The midfield playmaker is in South Africa for his first ever World Cup, and relishing the prospect.

And he admits the sense of anticipation back home ahead of the biggest tournament of all is off the Richter Scale in exactly the same way as in England.

"I'm really excited about the World Cup," says Milijaš.

"Not many players get the chance to go to a World Cup - it happens once every four years and is a part of footballing history.

"It's been crazy in Serbia, the interest is massive.

"Just like in England, people are talking about the World Cup from at least a month before it starts.

"The World Cup in England is what everyone is talking about and it's the same in my country as well.

"I would also wish England all the best, I think they have a great team and can do well.

"But if we did end up meeting them at some stage, of course I will be wanting Serbia to win!"

Milijaš and Serbia carved an impressive path through qualifying, edging out favourites France to top the group with the Wolves man chipping in with two goals.

The 27-year-old, who rates wingers Milos Krasic and Milan Jovanovic as potential threats, believes it proved a point that they can cut it on the big stage.

"We did well in the qualifiers picking up some great results against big teams and winning the group was important," he explains.

"We showed to ourselves and to other people that we can be a good team.

"We deserved it and people now talk about us like we can do something at the World Cup.

"And we think like that as well."

The first World Cup Milijaš remembers watching is 1990 in Italy.

The last tournament in Germany is less memorable, as he looked on from afar as Serbia lost all three of their group games.

Germany, Ghana and Australia stand in the way this time around, but Milijaš believes qualification for the last 16 is well within their grasp.

"We have to feel we can get through the group stage and after that it's just a case of trying to win games and see where we can go," he added.

"But it will be tough.

"We are in a group of four continents!

"Germany always play really well in World Cups, they'll be going for 95 minutes in every single game.

"We know that and will be ready for it but maybe the Australia and Ghana games will actually be more important.

"I think we can beat Germany and win the group but we will take one game at a time.

"If we can beat Ghana in our first game it would be huge."

Milijaš collected Wolves' Goal of the Season accolade at the end of his first campaign in England thanks to a piledriver which proved crucial against Bolton last December.

He was also on target from the penalty spot in Serbia's final friendly win before the tournament as they edged out Cameroon 4-3 on Saturday.

He admits finding the net in South Africa, even if it was from one yard rather than 30, would be an incredible feeling.

Beyond that he is simply looking forward to the experience of stepping out with the world's best on the greatest stage of all.

"I think it is going to be a great atmosphere," he says.

"I don't know how it will compare with previous tournaments but I'm sure the atmosphere will be brilliant.

"Fans from all over the world are excited to go because it's Africa, it's different for everybody and I'm sure they will put on a great show.

"For me, I will give everything for my country - everything, not just in football.

"When you have the shirt it is the best thing that can happen to a player.

"You have the chance to represent your country and your people.

"It is pressure, but when the game starts that pressure becomes something better for me."

* Serbia's three group games are against Ghana on June 13, followed by Germany on June 18 and Australia on June 23.  Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is expected to be summarising for the BBC for the Germany game.
