Adlene Guedioura made his Algeria bow in Dublin last night - and was a lick of paint away from a debut goal - but it was Kevin Doyle who won the battle of club loyalties as the Republic of Ireland won 3-0.
Doyle produced his customary tireless display up front and went close to an opening goal in just the third minute meeting Damien Duff's free kick with an excellent first time shot which forced a save from Algerian keeper Faouzi Chaouchi.
From then on Doyle was more a provider of assists than getting on the end of them winning a series of flick-ons to give Robbie Keane several chances.
Keane scored the second and third Irish goals in the second half to add to the opener, a 31st minute header from Derby midfielder Paul Green, who was making his first international start.
Kevin Foley didn't make it on from the bench for Ireland, but on the opposite side Guedioura marked his first international appearance by playing the full 90 minutes for Algeria.
Perhaps more at home as an attack-minded midfielder in his time at Wolves so far, Guedioura was deployed in the unfamiliar role of right back, and at times found the likes of Duff and company slightly too hot to handle.
But going forward he was calm and composed and went mighty close to a debut goal in the 84th minute.
An excellent header from a left wing corner bounced back off the crossbar, and while a goal then would have narrowed the arrears to 2-1 Keane then went up the other end to win a penalty from which the game was secured.
And that meant the Republic finished off their campaign with successive wins over teams heading to the World Cup, Doyle having scored one and made the other in Tuesday's 2-1 victory against Paraguay.
Wolves' record signing can finally forget about football after a long, hard season and in preparation for his summer wedding to fiancée Jenny.
"We've won 3-0 against a team going to the World Cup when truly it should be Paraguay and Algeria who look like winning games, with them concentrating on the World Cup," he said.
"But we looked more like the team in the last two games who've been more up for it.
"Whether it would have been like that if we were going to a World Cup maybe it would have been a different story, but to play well against teams like that shows what we could have been like.
"It could still be a busy few weeks for me alright, it'll take a few days just to switch off though.
"It has been the longest season for me but the most enjoyable.
"Joining Wolves and the build-up to that was two or three weeks and that began about this time last year.
"I think it's been the most satisfying season; we were tipped to be relegated and there was a bit of pressure on me joining Wolves, being the record signing.
"So to play well and live up to that I suppose, having an all-round decent season, I'm pleased."
