Craddock Calls For Positive Finish

Posted on: Fri 07 May 2010

Player of the Season Jody Craddock has called for Wolves to banish a rare defensive off-day at Portsmouth last week by finishing with a flourish against Sunderland on Sunday (kick off 4pm).

The visit of Craddock's former club to Molineux brings the curtain down on a successful season in which Wolves secured Barclays Premier League status with two games to spare.

But the club captain, in talks over a new contract to remain at Wolves, doesn't want a repeat of the Pompey defeat to carry into the summer.

"We were disappointed to lose at Portsmouth and as a defender you don't want to be letting three goals in," he said.

"It's not good enough and if we'd been like that more often this season we wouldn't have stayed in the Premier League.

"We were all disappointed particularly as we made a lot of chances and could have scored a few goals.

"Everyone wanted to win the game but maybe we just that little bit of intensity.

"None of us would want that to happen but maybe sub-consciously it did.

"We all want to do better against Sunderland and go out on a high.

"Every player wants to go out and win every game and to do that we need to produce a good performance.

"It will be a tough game because they've got some good players but it's a good challenge for us and a good game to have."

Craddock admits it should be a day of celebration for supporters given Wolves' survival, their first at this level for almost 30 years.

But despite the fond memories of his time on Wearside - not to mention the warm reception he continues to receive from the Sunderland faithful - he is hoping the Molineux Men can round off 2009/10 on a successful note.

"It promises to be a good day for the fans to celebrate what we've achieved and I'm looking forward to it," he added.

"Fourteenth place is still up for grabs and the higher we finish the bigger the benefits for the club - everybody knows that.

"We need to do everything we can to try and make that happen.

"For me it's a nice game to finish on because I've got some good memories from my time in Sunderland.

"The fans were great to me and it will be nice to face them on the last day of the season.

"We're at home and it would be good to get a result after losing there earlier in the season."

* Craddock will officially receive his Wolves Player of the Year award after the end of the game, but only if fans stay off the pitch.  Mick McCarthy and the squad will also carry out a lap of honour, but if there is any encroachment then they will head to the dressing room and not return.
