Mancienne Relishing Experience

Posted on: Thu 01 Apr 2010

Michael Mancienne admits he is continuing to relish the experience of a Barclays Premier League survival battle.

The on-loan Chelsea man has already displayed his versatility for Wolves by operating in a central midfield role, and returned there for the two recent games with West Ham and Everton.

In total Mancienne has featured in 25 of  the 30 league games for which he has been eligible so far, of which 17 were starts, vital experience having appeared in only four top flight outings at Stamford Bridge prior to his arrival.

"I have played in this position before but I'm learning about it more and more every time I play it," says the 22-year-old.

"I am happy playing anywhere I'm put but I do enjoy the midfield role.

"Being involved in this sort of survival battle is really good experience for me.

"And to be doing it in the top flight is particularly important.

"This is why I came here to pick up that sort of experience."

Wolves' recent good run had seen Mancienne coming off the bench on several occasions before returning to the side at Upton Park.

It would have been a special evening against several of his England-under-21 team-mates as Wolves won against a Hammers side whose manager Gianfranco Zola is one of Mancienne's heroes.

"The boys have been playing well recently and had some massive results recently," he confirms.

"I was just pleased to come in and start the last two games and play some part.

"West Ham was particularly enjoyable because we played some really good stuff and looked comfortable.

"When we went 3-0 up we were able to relax and really enjoy the game a lot more.

"It was just great to be involved.

"When the team are playing well you want to play as many games as possible.

"Everton was more of a scrap of a game and we had to show a lot of heart.

"Everton are a really good side so I thought we did really well to come out with a point."

All roads now lead to the Emirates Stadium for Wolves first ever visit to tackle the might of Arsenal this weekend.

Mancienne came on as a substitute as Wolves lost 4-1 to the Gunners at Molineux in November, and while not getting carried away with the recent improvement in form and position, believes the team shouldn't show any fear come 3pm on Saturday.

"I'm looking forward to the Arsenal game," he says.

"Of course it's going to be tough but if we can play like we have been in recent games then we can give a good account of ourselves.

"We did well against Arsenal for half an hour in the home game and I think we've showed we can compete with the big teams.

"We've just got to do it again on Saturday.

"No one is getting carried away with our position.

"It's the cliché of taking all games one at a time and getting as many points as we can."

Nearing the end of his season-long loan, and having spent the first half of Wolves' Championship-winning campaign at Molineux, Mancienne has been the subject of questions to boss Mick McCarthy about the possibility of a further temporary return in the future.

The boss has stated those discussions are for a far later date, a view shared by the Londoner who has purely survival on his mind.

"I'm not even thinking about it to be honest," he says.

"All I'm concentrating on is these last six games for Wolves.

"As to what happens after that we'll have to see."
