Attack Best Form Of Defence?

Posted on: Tue 30 Mar 2010

Ronald Zubar is well aware of the severe nature of the challenge facing Wolves as they make their first ever visit to the Emirates Stadium to tackle Arsenal on Saturday.

But in Kevin Doyle and company, the French defender thinks the Molineux Men also possess threats with which to try and cause the Gunners a few problems of their own.

Wolves held Arsenal for half an hour of the reverse fixture at home last November, before the Gunners showed their class to run out 4-1 winners.

However Zubar's compatriot William Gallas later admitted that he found Doyle difficult to handle in the Wolves' attack, lending weight to suggestions that Mick McCarthy's men can make the trip South with the ambition of getting forward themselves rather than just remaining on the defensive.

"At the moment we are confident after the last four games going into what we know will be a really difficult game," he said.

"Arsenal drew against Birmingham and although they've got Barcelona first they'll be needing to win against us.

"Arsenal are a great team who play beautiful football and people like to watch them play.

"But I am sure we will get chances in the game as well.

"I don't know if Gallas will play because of injury and Vermalen didn't play last time.

"Whoever plays there I am sure Kevin Doyle can cause them problems.

"He's done that to a lot of defences this season and Gallas told me last time he doesn't like playing against Kevin.

"It's because of his movement and battling and chasing.

"If we all chase like that we have a chance and then there's always going to be free kicks and corners."

Zubar continued:  "Arsenal will always be looking to get forward and I don't think the gaffer  will want us to just stay back and defend.

"We know what they are capable of but we must also try and attack ourselves and create chances.

"That will be our best chance of trying to get something from the game.

"But even so it's also all about staying in the game as long as we can.

"If we can prevent them scoring the pressure is on them because no one will be expecting anything from us.

"We are very much the underdogs."

Zubar is currently the man in possession of the Wolves' right back berth also utilised this season by Kevin Foley and Richard Stearman.

Saturday's clash with Everton saw him renew acquaintances with the team against which he made his Barclays Premier League debut last October, and he was once again pleased that Wolves emerged with a point.

"It was a big game against a tough team but a good point," he added.

"It made it four games unbeaten and eight points as well against some good teams including Everton and Aston Villa who are potentially top six teams.

"So it's definitely been a good few weeks for the lads.

"We knew the sort of test we'd get from Everton.

"It was so important that we didn't make a mistake or give them a goal and limited them to few chances.

"We knew before that if we could come away with a point that would be a good result.

"It's all about fighting and scrapping to stay in the game particularly in the early stages if you are to get results in this league."

Being part of the defenders' union Zubar was particularly pleased to see Wolves keep a clean sheet despite the odd sticky moment or two at the hands of the Toffees.

But he was also involved in one glorious passing move which saw him shoot wide at the other end as he looked to add to the two goals already plundered in Wolves' colours.

"It's good to get a clean sheet because we were so close to getting one at West Ham and not too far away at Burnley either," he explained.

"We feel confident as a defence that we can limit teams to few chances and I loved the physical nature of the game with Everton.

"As I've said before my first job is to defend and keep things solid but I also like getting forward when I can.

"It was a nice one and two-touch move with Foles and Doyler and a great ball but I just couldn't get the ball on target.

"Overall I was happy with my performance though."
