The sides last met at Molineux back in October. It was a tightly contested derby game and a Sylvan Ebanks-Blake penalty in the 83rd minute gave Wolves a point shortly after Gabriel Agbonlahor had given the visitors the lead.

The last encounter between the teams at Villa Park was in the December of the 2003/04 season in the top flight. Despite laying siege to the Villa goal for the majority of the second half, Wolves left the lunchtime clash in Birmingham empty handed. Juan Pablo Angel scored a brace, with the goals coming within two minutes of each other around 20 minutes into the game. Alex Rae got one back for Wolves on 36 minutes, drilling a low shot past Thomas Sorenson from just inside the area, but Gareth Barry restored Villa's two goal advantage within three minutes of the second half restart. With ten minutes left on the clock, Kenny Miller released Mark Kennedy, who held off Mark Delaney, before firing past Stefan Postma to set up a frenetic end to the game.
