Boss's Mixed Feelings

Posted on: Fri 12 Mar 2010

Boss Mick McCarthy admits he's getting pretty fed up of talking about Wolves playing well without getting the points to show for it.

But at the same time he has to take the positives that a continuation of the performance levels shown in recent weeks will see the team on an upward curve.

Asked if he's sick of talking about playing well but losing Mick said:  "Yes and no.

"Yes I am but I'm glad we're playing well because that's the only way we can turn it around.

"We've just got to get over Saturday's game.

"It was really disappointing and demoralising and I felt bad after the game, but if I stop feeling like that after a defeat, I shall pack the job in."

"And the players keep going - they've got to keep coming back and keep believing that playing that way will see us o-k.

"We did have four really good chances in Saturday's game - and we had better ones than they did actually, plus half chances.

"The only time they started to open us up was when they went 1-0 up and we left four up front at times, so we were going to get caught.

"David Jones and Stephen Ward had really good chances in the first half and Sam Vokes did right at the end - and I'd forgotten Kev Foley had a good one too and Kevin Doyle had a shot.

"We haven't scored enough goals but maybe we're creating more chances now.

"I think we've just improved as a group, the team has improved and so have the players.

"I wouldn't say there was a lack of belief at the start of the season, but suddenly the penny drops and there's a realisation that they can play at this level."

After the disappointment of performance but not points against big-hitting pair Chelsea and Manchester United at Molineux, it's a case of life on the road now for Wolves with a claret-and-blue triple header against Burnley, Aston Villa and West Ham.

Wolves remain just outside the bottom three heading into the game but only on goal difference after Burnley drew with Stoke last night.

Mick has long stated he doesn't believe playing away from home to be a major disadvantage, and will be expecting a positive display at Turf Moor on Saturday.

"Pundits keep saying - although I don't really listen to them - that we've got to get eight, nine or 10 points away from home, and if we don't them we haven't got any chance," he said.

"But we've already beaten Wigan and Tottenham away and drawn at Everton, Stoke and Hull, so there's nine points.

"The reality is but for a wonder strike at Sunderland, we were cooking on gas there, and but for the sending off at Liverpool, we were flying there as well without any problems.

"So I've got no problems with going away from home."
