Boss: Keep Our Heads

Posted on: Tue 09 Mar 2010

Boss Mick McCarthy will encourage his players to "keep their heads" over the crucial remaining ten games of the season - conscious of plenty of twists and turns in the survival battle ahead.

Wigan's 1-0 win over Liverpool last night took them four points clear of the Molineux Men - Sunderland face Bolton tonight - while Burnley could put Wolves into the bottom three should they beat Stoke at home tomorrow night.

Then of course it's Wolves' turn to travel to Turf Moor on Saturday, the first of the ten games which will determine their top flight status.

"I keep looking at the situation and I know between the jigs and the reels of it," says Mick.

"Burnley play Stoke tomorrow and we could be in the bottom three before we play them.

"But that doesn't matter, it is where we finish that matters.

"Burnley is a huge game for us but then we have two or three 'biggies'.

"West Ham is a big one. Who's to say we can't go down there and beat them?

"We have got Blackburn and Sunderland here, we have Fulham away, we have Stoke and Portsmouth.

"We have games that are winnable right to the very end of the season, so we just have to keep going, keep cool, and don't lose our heads at all."

And while well aware of the importance surrounding Saturday's encounter, the fact there will still be 27 points to play for after the game means Wolves are far from in a "make or break" situation at Turf Moor.

"There is no point saying that," said Mick.

"Why would I want to do that anyway?

"We know it is a huge fixture. What happens if they draw tomorrow and beat us on Saturday?

"That's them three points in front of us. We just have to crack on.

"What happens if we beat both Blackburn and Stoke at home? What are the fixtures they have got in return?

"Then we have Portsmouth away - who knows how they are going to be feeling? We have Sunderland here for the last kick of the season, we've got West Ham away. We have got teams all around us.

"So if we get 12 points out of it, wherever we get them from, and then we don't know if that will be enough.

"But if we get 12 points then somebody else has got to get 12 points.

"I know Burnley is a huge game, I am not going to try to play down the importance of the game but I am also not going to 'big it up' either that it is the end of the world if we get beat.

"Because if we do that we might as well pack up on Saturday if that is what happens.

"And there's no chance of that."
