Sam Ready To Play It Again

Posted on: Tue 09 Mar 2010

Striker Sam Vokes has vowed to quickly banish the disappointments of Saturday's injury time miss against Manchester United and put away the next chance that comes along in the battle for survival.

Vokes cut a crestfallen figure as he departed Molineux on Saturday evening having squandered the chance to earn a point against the Barclays Premier League champions by blasting over the bar in the closing stages.

But he was more upbeat returning to training yesterday, and has turned his focus to the possible opportunities ahead rather than the one which got away.

"Obviously I was really disappointed," the Welsh international admitted.

"I don't think I was a good person to be about on Saturday night - the family were upset and I don't think my missus was too happy!

"I've been thinking about it all weekend but am now trying to get it out of my head.

"It was great to get back in yesterday and train again just to start to get it out of my system.

"And now I'm just looking forward to the next game on Saturday.

"It's one of those I've just got to behind me and get on with the rest of the season.

"I can't afford to dwell on it and am just looking ahead to the next ten games."

The chance came to Vokes quite quickly after Ronald Zubar's blocked tackle was missed by a United defender, but the frontman - who was just being played onside by Paul Scholes - is not willing to accept any mitigation.

"I'm not going to make any excuses," he said.

"The ball did come through a few people and came to me quite quickly and I just tried to put it in.

"It's one of those that if it goes in you're the hero and if it doesn't you're not!"

Vokes admits boss Mick McCarthy and the rest of the Wolves squad were right behind him in the wake of Saturday's game.

His sharpness and finishing in training have caught the eye of all since he returned from a loan spell with Leeds, and with that continued improvement he is confident of finding the net.

"The gaffer and the other lads have been really supportive," he said.

"The gaffer pulled me after the game and told me I could be the one who gets the goal to keep us in the league.

"It's all been really positive for me since I came back from Leeds.

"It was valuable for me there and it's done me a lot of good.

"Since I got back training has been great and it's been nice to be involved with being on the bench.

"And I think I'm due a goal now so hopefully it will come soon.

"As a striker those are the sort of chances you want to come along and I'd back myself to score them.

"It didn't happen for me at the weekend but I've just got to make sure I stick the next chance away when it comes along."
