Every Point's A Prisoner

Posted on: Fri 26 Feb 2010

Boss Mick McCarthy admits Wolves will be going out to try and win at Bolton tomorrow - but certainly wouldn't underestimate the taking of a point.

Bolton may have struggled to find the net in recent weeks, but Mick is certainly preparing Wolves for a major test of their survival credentials at the Reebok Stadium.

As such he knows that coming back down the M6 with at least something would be a good afternoon's work.

"Clearly the emphasis will be on Bolton to win the game," said Mick.

"It's their home game and their fans will be turning up seeing it as an opportunity to get three points and get above Wolves.

"It's not just as easy as that.

"I keep saying: 'Stay in it'. Don't be thinking that three points is a 'must' and lose the game.

"If we go there and take a point we'd still be above Bolton and would have done some damage to one of their home games.

"I think a point away from home against anyone in the Premier League is good - infact any point.

"Every point is a prisoner in this division whether it's at home or away.

"Never ever should a point in the Premier League be devalued, certainly for us in the bottom half of the table.

"If you're one of the top four at home against one of us bottom six than maybe.

"But any point is so valuable for us.

"We are going to try and win three points but if we come away with a point it will be as valuable as any we have had this season."

Whatever happens tomorrow, it won't decide anything in terms of the final picture at the end of the season.

That doesn't reduce the importance of the game, and Mick is confident Wolves can continue their recent form while also adding the right result.

And he's also unmoved about having to play away the likes of close rivals Bolton, Burnley and Portsmouth away from home between now and the end of the season.

"We've got 12 games left and I'd have taken this position at the start," he added.

"The away games don't bother me at all because we've played well away from home.

"We've beaten Wigan, beaten Spurs, drawn with Everton and Stoke, but for a wondergoal at Sunderland we might have got somewhere, Liverpool where a sending off changed the course of the game.

"They are huge games coming up, opportunity for us to put distance between ourselves and Bolton or ourselves and Burnley but they'll be viewing it exactly the same and thinking they've got an advantage because they are at home.

"Someone said to me we've only lost two of our last five which I hadn't thought about but if we do the same over the next five games I'd be happy.

"If we're unbeaten in three we'd be doing alright, especially if we won three of them!

"So to put everything on this one game would be ridiculous - it's how many points you end up with that matters.

"If ever it was proved it was the week we lost to Birmingham and it was doom and gloom.

"And then we took nine points out of 12 and there's a different perspective on it.

"We were suddenly out of the bottom three and were even 12th at one stage - a lofty 12th!

"It's what we end up with but a point at least would be nice tomorrow."

Andy Keogh is back travelling with the team while Stephen Ward is back training today after suffering from illness yesterday.
