Keogh Closing In

Posted on: Sat 20 Feb 2010

Andy Keogh is hoping to play a part in helping Wolves secure Barclays Premier League status as he closes in on a return to full training.

The versatile striker, who scored Wolves first goal of this season in landing the club their first ever away Premier League win at Wigan, is targeting another decisive contribution at the other end of the campaign once he returns to fitness.

Boss Mick McCarthy has suggested that might be as early as the end of next week, with the trip to Burnley in three weeks time a possibility.

"Keogh was out doing a bit at the end of last week and is hopeful of training next week," said Mick.

"There's not a chance of him being involved against Bolton, but maybe we can look towards Burnley.

"He's as fit as a flea is Keogh but he needs a couple of weeks of full training and needs to get out there and get bashed and kicked and stamped on like you do."

And Keogh knows that his return to arms would signal the end to over two months of frustration since undergoing an ankle operation.

"It was very frustrating when I got injured because I felt that I could have contributed to the team in different games," he said.

"I'd been feeling good with myself and then I had a freak accident in training.

"I'd never been out with a serious injury like that before.

"It's been nine weeks now but I've worked hard and am looking forward to getting back into full training soon.

"The physios here have been brilliant and they have done everything possible to get me back as quickly as possible.

"I hope I have a role to play - that's why I've worked so hard to get myself fit. I want to help the team out whenever I can.

"It's just been frustrating sitting on the sidelines week in, week out, itching to get back out there.

"The first big tackle I go into will be a bit nervy but once I get that out of the way I'll be happy.

"But the physios wouldn't let me go out training unless the ankle is as strong as it can be.

"You have to get that mental block out of your head and just get through it because it's physically strong enough.

"We have some good games coming up that I want to be involved with - the ones against the teams around us, they are the ones that we want to be taking the most points from and giving our best performances."

Dave Edwards meanwhile has also had some positive news from the specialist and while not perhaps likely to return to full training next week isn't far away.

Michael Kightly is still under treatment on his knee having also been rehabilitating from an ankle operation.
