Ebanks-Blake Hoping To Kop A Goal

Posted on: Sat 26 Dec 2009

Boyhood Liverpool fan Sylvan Ebanks-Blake admits it would be a dream to score against his idols in front of the Kop tonight - but that there's also a job to do for Wolves to pick up a result at Anfield.

The Wolves striker, who admired the likes of John Barnes, Ian Rush, Michael Owen and Steve McManaman during his formative years of following the Reds' fortunes, is still searching for his first top flight goal from open play despite a series of performances hailed as "outstanding" by boss Mick McCarthy.

And he is hoping one of the most famous venues in football might just be the one which helps spark that breakthrough when Wolves try and cause an upset in tonight's televised tussle (5.30pm).

"It's a big thing for all of us, but being a fan of Liverpool growing up as a kid it will be a big occasion," says Sylvan.

"When I was a kid, I admired players such as John Barnes and Ian Rush towards the end of his career and then Michael Owen and Steve McManaman.

"I've always loved football and I loved playing it and I used to watch them on the telly.

"And so as a young player, I took to them as a team.

"I'll support them before and after the game, but not during it - I'm going there to do a job for Wolves.

"It would mean something to anyone to score in front of The Kop.

"There are big players who have scored in front of The Kop and it's the highlight of their careers.

"It would be brilliant to score at Anfield, but to win there would be a huge thing for all of us.

"We're in this league on merit, we're not just passengers and there are points to play for and we'll be playing for them.

"We're there to play the game, not the occasion, and while Liverpool have had some bad results recently, they're a good team and they've got to bounce back somewhere.

"Let's just hope it's not against us."

Although not counting any Liverpool players past or present as a "hero", the confident Wolves striker is always keen to watch and learn from any of the country's top players.

"You'd be stupid not to take anything from those players into your game," he says.

"Ultimately you have to be yourself and I want to be known as Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, but you have to admire strikers who are doing it in the top league and have done what I'm trying to do.

"I try to watch the best players in the world and learn from all good players.

"Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are world class players so they fit into that category.

"Any player who's doing it well at the top level you try to learn from and I'm no different."

He's always no different in terms of being a striker who wants to score goals, and add to the penalty rattled home to secure a point against Aston Villa earlier this season.

That level of confidence he possesses however, shared by his manager, means he's adamant the breakthrough cannot be far away.

"It will come soon, I know it," he insists.

"I'm more than sure of that - if you keep knocking, then someone has got to open the door.

"Football's funny like that - one day everything you touch turns to gold, the next, everything becomes harder to go into the net.

"I'll keep having shots and I'll never stop believing in myself.

"I'm sure that goal will come - it will probably come off my backside or something and I'll get a few in a row.

"I'm just delighted to be playing and winning games and being part of a big project this year."
