Milijas Hopes For Mersey Paradise

Posted on: Thu 24 Dec 2009

Nenad Milijaš admits he can't wait to savour "one of the best atmospheres in Europe" should be make his first appearance at Anfield for Wolves on Boxing Day.

But the creator-in-chief Serbian midfielder insists he won't be admiring the famous surroundings for too long.

Because once the game kicks off both he and Wolves will be firmly concentrating on trying to add to the current 19-point tally in the Barclays Premier League.

And any admiration for Liverpool and their famous home will quickly be forgotten.

"Liverpool is a very famous name in football," he said.

"We know that, but we also have to view the game like every other game.

"Liverpool haven't had the sort of results they are used to recently but we know it will be a very hard game.

"They are a big team with great support but we have to look to take something from the game.

"We have to go in thinking we may be able to take a point or even three against any team that we face.

"We still need points and wherever we go we have to look to give the best of ourselves and try to win.

"I've seen Liverpool games on the television for many years and Anfield is well known as being one of the best atmospheres in Europe.

"Everyone says it's great to play there and that they have great fans.

"We'll be expecting that, and it will be great to play at that stadium but once the referee blows the whistle, all that will be forgotten.

"Then we'll just be thinking about our own performance on the pitch and our own fans because we will be wanting to get a result that sends them home happy."

The midfielder has certainly grown into his role in the Wolves engine room in recent weeks, but his stats as regards 'assists' for the season is already pretty impressive.

Six assists, and two goals, mean he has had a hand in almost half of Wolves' 17 league goals thus far without having started every game.

"I am delighted to have been involved in so many of our goals," he acknowledges.

"I think players have started to get to know me and how I play as I've settled in.

"I've also managed to get a couple of goals myself as well as providing assists.

"The other players are helping me from things like free kicks because they are making the runs to get on the end of the balls into the box.

"For the team it's been good to take nine points from our last four games.

"We needed it and everyone is delighted with how we have done.

"We know we are a good team and we believe we can stay in this division so we felt we could get the wins we have done recently.

"We have showed our fans that we can play football strong and hard and score goals."

The 26-year-old admits it has taken time for him to find a sustained level of performance following his summer move from Red Star Belgrade.

As has been documented by boss Mick McCarthy, it is far from easy to settle into a new country and a new style of football.

But Nenad believes he has now grasped the physical demands of life in the top flight which then allow him to play his football.

"It was difficult at first when I came here to get used to the other side of the game," he explains.

"Every player must do so much running and the game is more physical with less fouls than it is in Europe.

"I feel I've settled in now.

"The gaffer explained what I needed to do and I just tried to follow his advice in training.

"It was always something that I could learn.

"It's not like part of the game which you can't learn how to play and I wanted to do whatever the gaffer needed me to do because I want to be in the team and help the club.

"I was a little bit nervous when I wasn't in the team but now I understand why that was and I think it was the best for the team.

"We have 25 good players who can all play in the team and if we pick up injuries than we have people who can come in.

"The spirit here is very good, like a family, and every player who comes in knows what he has to do for the team."
