Warding Off Lennon?

Posted on: Fri 11 Dec 2009

Stephen Ward heads into tomorrow's potential clash with in-form Tottenham ace Aaron Lennon admitting: "There's no better winger in the Premier League at the moment."

But that's not going to stop the ever-positive Irishman doing everything in his power to negate Lennon's many qualities should he line up against him at White Hart Lane.

Spurs' wing wizard has been in scintillating mood in recent weeks, playing a major part in the Londoners' freescoring form and offering the Wolves defence a major challenge come 3pm tomorrow.

"You want to test yourself against these players," says Stephen.

"There's probably no better winger in the league at the moment than Aaron Lennon - he's probably England's first choice as well.

"If selected it will be a nice test for me to see how I do.

"He's probably one of their biggest danger men and we'll approach the game knowing that as we don't go into games with a blank sheet of paper not expecting what he brings to their team.

"We understand he's a big outlet for them and that the less he gets on the ball the better it is for us.

"If we can stop him from getting the ball then that will help us in one way from keeping them out.

"Everyone wants to play against these players, we've worked so hard to get here and have already come up against some top players so far this season.

"And we'll be working just as hard now week-in week-out to try and stay in the league as well."

Snuffing out some of Tottenham's potent threats will be no mean feat, but Stephen believes that's the key to any chances of a positive result.

For Wolves to maintain solid foundations in the early stages and then gradually start to impose their own game on the opposition.

"Obviously it will be a tough game but we have to go there with confidence after our result against Bolton," he added.

"Spurs are riding high themselves at the moment but after Saturday's performance hopefully we can go there and give a good account of ourselves and get something from the game.

"It will be important to keep things tight early on and stay in the game as long as we can.

"There's no doubt it's going to be very difficult in front of their home fans as well but if we can frustrate them then maybe we can start to impose our own game on them.

"That would give us a chance."
