Vive La France!

Posted on: Fri 06 Nov 2009

There will undoubtedly be very much a Gallic air around Molineux tomorrow evening for  Wolves' big Barclays Premier League clash with Arsenal.

From manager Arsene Wenger through to the likes of the albeit injured Gael Clichy, William Gallas, Bacary Sagna, Mikael Silvestre, Abou Diaby and Samir Nasri, there's a mighty strong French influence pervading the Gunners' ranks.

And so Wolves own French fancy Ronald Zubar will be somewhat outnumbered!

The 24-year-old defender admits he has always been something of an Arsenal fan given their French flair and the way they play the game.

But while he is looking forward to a post-match chat with his compatriots tomorrow - including close friend Gallas - he is hoping to do it in victory rather than defeat!

"There are a lot of French players in the Arsenal team and I know some of them very well," says Ronald.

"I played with Nasri at Marseilles for three years and know Gael Clichy and Sagna from the French under-21s team.

"William Gallas is a good friend of mine - he was also born in Guadeloupe and I speak to him all the time.

"He also played for Caen just like I did as well as Marseille and I'll be playing against him for the first time.

"He speaks a lot with me and it's good to listen to him because he has the experience and he can help me to progress.

"There's Arsene Wenger there as well and all French people love Arsenal and the way the play and when I was coming through I was the same."

Ronald expects some good-natured contact between the Frenchmen before kick off tomorrow as he reveals his admiration for the career to date of his more experienced counterpart.

"I saw their game on Wednesday and have been in touch with Gallas since," he said.

"He just sent me a message telling me to stay concentrated on my game.

"Hopefully we'll all get together for a chat after the game and I'll able to enjoy our victory!

"Gallas has been a great player in England.

"He's come through some tough times with the supporters and the press but he did really well at Chelsea and now at Arsenal as well where he has been the captain.

"He's a big player for the French national team and I think he's among the top four or five defenders in the world.

"He's someone I like to follow and would love to have anything like the career he has had so far- but I just hope he has a bad day on Saturday!"

That opinion might well extend to several other of the Arsenal personnel given their current 12-game unbeaten run in which they have plundered 33 goals.

But Ronald believes Wolves have it in their armoury to make the most of the lack of expectation on their shoulders and try and secure a positive result.

"Arsenal are among the top four teams in the league and it is a difficult game for us," he admitted.

"They are a quick team who play very good football and are strong throughout the team with so many internationals.

"We go into the game after three good performances but we must also make sure we play well in the first half and better than we did against Stoke.

"We need to play like we did in the second half when we came back strongly and played some good football.

"The fans gave us really good vibes and I think teams are respecting us in this division.

"There isn't any big pressure on us because everyone will expect Arsenal to win.

"But we know we need to win matches as well especially as our next game afterwards is away at Chelsea."

As ever the fans will playa major part in trying to ensure Wolves make the most of their underdog status after tomorrow's 5.30pm kick off.

And Ronald, who celebrated wildly with the away following at the Britannia Stadium last weekend, believes they are already comparing very favourably with supporters from his previous club.

"As I've said before the fans have really helped me since I came here," he said.

"I couldn't believe how great they were at Stoke.

"They were crazy getting behind us and even when we were 2-0 down and that's important.

"That's a great mentality and it wasn't the same in Marseilles.

"There if we were 2-0 down the fans would boo and turn on us.

"I can only thank the fans for their support of me and the team and hope they stay the same both at home and away.

"And I hope I can pay them back with my performances."
