Just Around The Corner
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake heads into tomorrow's derby cauldron with Aston Villa confident that his first Barclays Premier League goal is "just around the corner."
The twice-crowned Championship Golden Boot winner has suffered a frustrating start to the season which saw him pick up a hamstring injury in the opening day defeat at the hands of West Ham.
Having worked his way back to fitness Sylvan's second league start came at Everton last weekend, and a promising performance for striker and team saw him twice come close to opening his top flight account.
While recognising life won't get any easier against in-form Villa in tomorrow's televised lunchtime showdown, the 23-year-old will once again be doing his utmost to get off the mark.
"I felt good at Everton and it's all about improving the more minutes you get on the pitch especially now it's in the Premier League," he said.
"I'm just looking to build on that and hopefully play as many games as I can.
"I had a couple of opportunities in the game and am getting closer and closer so I'm confident that first goal will be just around the corner.
"Injuries are always frustrating and nowhere more so than when it happens on the first day of the season but you have to get on with it and I'm back fit now.
"I've got myself back in the team and have just got to do what it takes to stay there."
Sylvan isn't the only one of the Wolves team now back at full throttle after early season injury problems.
Michael Kightly made his first Premier League start of the season last weekend while Chris Iwelumo is back and standing by for bench duties in the absence of the suspended Stefan Maierhofer.
Kevin Doyle is also firing on all cylinders after his own pre-season hernia operation and Sylvan believes that while Wolves have already produced some more-than-decent performances, the best is still to come.
On his partnership with Kevin he said: "It looked good with Doyler last weekend who is a quality player but we've got some good strikers here.
"It's up to us to put the performances in to get the results to help us stay in this league.
"We've got a lot of our injured players back now which gives the gaffer not far off a full squad to choose from and he's not had that yet so far.
"Maybe now the fans will start to see an even better Wolves team performing at the level we know we can reach."
On the game itself Sylvan is well aware of the sort of task facing Wolves when tackling a Villa side fresh from a seven-match league unbeaten run and with victories over Liverpool and Chelsea already in the locker this season.
But the Championship Player of the Year is confident a repeat of the display at Goodison Park should see Wolves well in the reckoning for a positive result on derby day.
"It's a big game which I'm sure fans and players alike are looking forward to," he said.
"I've already played against West Brom and Birmingham since I came back to Wolves which have always been great occasions and I expect it to be the same tomorrow.
"Obviously you do get a different sense about the place when it's a derby game and it's one the fans are always talking about beforehand for bragging rights and so on.
"But that's more for the fans than for us and we have to concentrate on doing our jobs on the pitch.
"Aston Villa are a good side with a top manager and a British-led set of players.
"They'll be a tough team to play against but we've got to be right at it and then hopefully come away with a positive result.
"The way we played against Everton was at a level we need to reach every game and that's what we'll be trying to do.
"It would be nice to produce a similar performance and come away with three points rather than just the one."
