Have A Little Patience

Posted on: Sat 26 Sep 2009

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is ready to play patience as he bids to fight his way into the Wolves starting line-up admitting those currently on the fringes can have no complaints if the team continue to win.

Last season's Championship Player of the Year and double Golden Boot winner is back in action after suffering an opening day hamstring injury, coming off the bench in last weekend's league win against Fulham and playing the opening hour of Wednesday's Carling Cup defeat to Manchester United.

But with Kevin Doyle and Andy Keogh having sewn the seeds of a promising partnership up front, Sylvan admits the likes of he and Stefan Maierhofer must continue to push on from the outside in a bid for a starting berth.

"I was delighted to get back and get some minutes on Sunday and then to start at Old Trafford," he says.

"I was just happy to be out there and back involved.

"It was unfortunate with the result the other night but it was good to go back and see some old faces and play on that stage for a comeback game.

"Now I feel ready to go back into the squad and be a valued member of the squad going forward and have a say in things.

"My main aim is to keep pushing and trying for a start in the league but the boys have been doing really well.

"We won our last game and have been putting points on the board and there's a great team ethic and camaraderie about the place.

"I just want to do what I can and add my little bit.

"I'm a striker who wants to be playing football but I'll be patient and as long as we are winning games if it keeps me out of the team then I'm not going to complain.

"Doyler and Keogh are good players and good lads who have worked well together.

"If we keep playing well and winning games then great and I've just got to keep pushing and working hard."

Sylvan is not the only key figure facing a challenge to return to the starting line-up.

Club captain Jody Craddock, current Player of the Season Kevin Foley and major influence Michael Kightly are all fighting their way into the reckoning following injury.

"It's good to have players coming back to full fitness and shows the squad that we've got going forward.

"We're all chomping at the bit and are all wanting to play but we need a good squad and the manager and the players wouldn't have it any other way.

"Competition for places brings the best out of everyone which is what you need at this level."

Wolves return to Barclays Premier League hostilities at Sunderland tomorrow buoyed in part by their performance at Old Trafford but still disappointed they didn't pick up a positive result.

Promising signs to take to the Stadium of Light, but also a reminder of the need to improve.

"We played some nice stuff in spells on Wednesday which is a positive but as the manager said we've got to stop being so nice and take the game to teams," added Sylvan.

"We kept the ball well at times and had some good spells so I think all the boys will take the positives of doing that in such an arena.

"We've now got to take a better performance to Sunderland and try and win the game.

"It's a tough place to go and Sunderland have spent a lot of money but we have to go there and believe we can get a result.

"We have to go there with the belief.

"It's a different ball game from Wednesday in that we're fighting for three points but we'll try and push them all the way to try and do that."

Sunderland boast plenty of attacking threats ready to take on Wolves, perhaps none more so than England striker Darren Bent, already on five goals for the season.

As one of his fellow members of the strikers' union, Sylvan has been impressed by the former Tottenham man's form.

"Darren Bent is a really good player who's had a good start to the season," he said.

"He's a goalscorer who knows where the back of the net is.

"He's done it at this level and is a dangerous player who we'll need to keep an eye on."
