Vokes To Go On Loan?

Posted on: Wed 09 Sep 2009

Mick McCarthy admits Sam Vokes is likely to go out on loan to benefit both his own development and his future with Wolves but is keeping an open mind on the club's other young professionals.

The Welsh striker was close to a temporary departure before the closure of the transfer window last week, but could now be set for an emergency loan stay to build up his match experience away from the Barclays Premier League.

While a keen admirer of the striker's talents, the boss is confident a spell of regular football will improve him further to the benefit of Wolves.

So far the 19-year-old has notched eight goals in Wolves colours from a total of eight starts and 36 substitute appearances.

"We'll see what happens when everyone gets back from the international duty," said Mick.

"Sam really needs to play some football.

"There was half a chance he could have gone out last week.

"For him to develop and for us to benefit he has to play regularly.

"Sam has had a meteoric rise from Bournemouth and for him to improve he's got to play some football so there's a chance he can go out."

With the transfer window now shut, the only way Sam or indeed any other player could leave Wolves before January is on an emergency loan basis, to a maximum of 93 days.

With any such deal, Wolves would be able to insert a recall clause which could become active after the first 28 days of the loan.

The boss would also consider similar options for the likes of Daniel Jones and Mark Little, but is also aware of the merits of playing in the Reserve Premier League for those younger professionals yet to enjoy any regular senior football.

"We are in a good reserve league this year with fixtures to be fulfilled," Mick added.

"But those games probably aren't of much use for players like Daniel Jones and Mark Little.

"They've had a taste of first team football and need to be playing it.

"For the likes of Danny Batth, David Davis, Scott Malone, Ashley Hemmings, James Spray - they need to be coached and worked with here and getting some reserve team football.

"We've not had any enquiries for any of them yet but we'll see.

"With those lads around we should have a tidy team for the reserve matches."
