Keen To Make A Point

Posted on: Tue 18 Aug 2009

Mick McCarthy admits Wolves would love to get some Barclays Premier League points on the door as quickly as possible to provide a much-needed confidence boost at the start of the season.

After opening the campaign with a 2-0 defeat at home to West Ham on Saturday, Wolves face a tough assignment with which to try and get things up and running at confidence-fuelled Wigan at the DW Stadium this evening.

And without adding any pressure to the early-season fixtures, the boss believes the sooner the better when it comes to picking up the first positive result.

"The earlier you get something on the board the better that's for sure," he said.

"I'd really like that tonight but I'm not going to say it's vital because we've got 37 games to go and it's all about how many points you end up with.

"If you'd said to Hull when they went on that losing run how vital it was that they needed to win one but they stayed up because of the points they'd already got.

"I'd love to get some points on the board but it will be what we end up with and not what we got tonight or on Saturday.

"Of course the earlier you get them the better because it gives you a bit more confidence to get some more."

Mick has also re-iterated the positives from Saturday's defeat at the hands of the Hammers, believing it showed his players they can certainly compete at what is often such an unforgiving level.

He added:  "We all knew how tough every game was going to be and the sort of quality players and pace of the game we were going to have to contend with.

"But amongst many things on Saturday I think we learned that we could cope with it.

"It was an open game with chances at both ends but I think some people have been a bit disparaging and condescending about our performance.

"Those saying that 'we'd have a go and be up at it and that at home we'd just come up and be in their faces' - we were better than that and until they scored from a wonderful finish we were the better side.

"I thought we played well and the players coped with it and actually proved that they can play at this level."
