Murray On The Mend

Posted on: Tue 11 Aug 2009

Matt Murray is hoping to be back in full training within the next "six to eight weeks" as he continues to recover from his ruptured patella tendon.

The popular keeper, who underwent a clean-up operation in the summer, has started running for the first time since sustaining the injury last November as he steps up his efforts on the comeback trail.

Matt was a guest last night on BBC Radio WM's evening show, and was in upbeat mood when giving an update on his progress.

"I started running yesterday which was nice, the first time since November," he said.

"I've been doing plenty of weights and all the CV work and putting plenty of hours in.

"It's constant work during the day with CV, pool and the weights and that.

"I can't complain though, it's a great job and I want to get back so I've got to put the work in.

"I was hoping to be ready for pre-season and joining in with the boys.

"But I couldn't quite push on to the next level at the end of last season and went to see the specialist who said I needed a little bit more surgery.

"I had that done, and have now gone passed where I was and have started running.

"I've also been doing some handling work but not taking off and diving because I need to do some more strength training and work on the explosive side of the game.

"The knee feels good, and is looking good on the scans, and the tendon looks nice and strong.

"I see a specialist on August 18 and if all goes well could be out training with the boys in four to six weeks and realistically, if I could be back in full training within six to eight weeks that would be really good."

Matt is certainly not getting carried away with his recovery, nor indeed with any thoughts of a first team return when he does return to full fitness.

And should the manager be in favour, he admits the possibility of a loan might be of benefit.

"Once I get back it's a case of looking to try and play some reserve games and see what happens," he added.

"I want to make sure I feel right before I do anything.

"The reserve league will help me playing a few games and I certainly won't want to put myself under any pressure and go out before I'm ready.

"But I certainly want to play some league football in front of a crowd again and going for three points.

"That would be good.

"If I did well somewhere and there then something happened at Wolves I'd have to be ready as I can be to try and take that chance.

"But we've got three very good keepers here now and there's certainly plenty of competition.

"And that's what the gaffer wants - everyone competing for their positions all the way across the pitch."

Matt was on air for an hour last night, not only talking about his progress but also taking a trip down Memory Lane and playing a variety of music reminding him of schooldays, the youth team at Wolves and the play-off success of 2003.
