Missed Chances Prove Costly

Wolves were made to pay for a host of missed chances, including a penalty, as Real Valladolid of the Spanish La Liga enjoyed a 2-0 win in a hard fought friendly at Molineux.

The Spanish team kicked-off attacking the North Bank end and they enjoyed most of the attacking play inthe opening minutes without actually having an attempt on goal.

In the sixth minute Andy Keogh drove a centre across the face of the Real goal and then good interplay between Karl Henry and Matt Jarvis set up a chance for Dave Edwards who shot over from 25-yards.

A dangerous cross from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake was headed clear by Pedro Munoz as Edwards and Jarvis raced in, but it was Matteus Goncalves that had the best chance when he beat the offside trap but poked the ball wide with only the advancing Wayne Hennessey to beat.

Midway through the half Justo Viveros pulled off a terrific save from Jarvis who had beaten his marker and arrowed an angled shot towards the far corner of the net.

Goncalves was booked for a heavy challenge on Kevin Foley in front of the Wolves dug out. After treatment Foley took the free-kick and when Viveros lost the ball after it had been floated into the area, Ebanks-Blake lobbed the rebound wide.

The ball was cleared upfield and Valladolid moved into the lead when Goncalves laid the ball into the path of Haris Medunjanin who slotted a precision shot beyond the dive of Hennessey.

Jarvis almost conjured up an equaliser when he ran between two defenders but his goalbound shot was blocked. Then Keogh took exception after he had been clattered from behind by Aridane Umpierrez and the pair were spoken to by the referee after a brief bout of pushing and shoving.

Nenad Milijaš took the resulting free-kick and Viveros did well to punch clear from a crowded six-yard box.

Just before the break a Milijaš corner was only half cleared and when Richard Stearman fed Ebanks-Blake the striker lashed a shot into the side netting.

Two swashbuckling runs down the left wing by Stephen Ward failed to realise a reward and Hennessey then made a comfortable save from Goncalves' 20-yard drive.

On the hour mark Kevin Doyle replaced Ebanks-Blake with both players getting a large round of applause from the crowd.

Within a couple of minutes of his introduction, Doyle was inches away from making contact and opening his account after Keogh had got a head to Jarvis's centre.

Doyle then went on a run through the heart of the Real defence before flicking a pass to Keogh whose low shot was gathered by Viveros.

Real went close to a second after Yuri Izeta had played a one-two with Goncalves and fired a hard shot into the side netting.

In the 73rd minute Wolves were awarded a penalty when a defender handled. Doyle took the spot kick but Viveros guessed correctly diving low to his left to turn the ball around the post (pictured).

There was a chance for substitute Andy Surman who ran through only for Viveros to block. The summer signing from Southampton regained possession and fired towards the net only for a defender to run across and boot the ball behind from in front of the line.

Surman had another shot blocked after Greg Halford had hoisted a long throw into the visitors area before Real increased their lead, against the run of play, with two minutes remaining as Asier Martin volleyed home after a cross from Antonio Fernandez.

Edwards thought he had got a consolation goal moments later but he was wrongly flagged offside and his effort was disallowed.
