Victory At The Racecourse

Posted on: Wed 05 Aug 2009

Wrexham 1 (Baynes 37)

Wolves 3 (Hemmings 6, Malone 47, Shackell 81)

Wolves enjoyed a 3-1 victory over Wrexham at The Racecourse Ground as they wound up their away programme of pre-season friendly games.

The Molineux men took the lead in the seventh minute through Ashley Hemmings after Welsh under 21 keeper Chris Maxwell had done well in turning a Scott Malone piledriver around the post.

Dave Jones' corner was only half cleared and when Jones regained possession he sent over an inch perfect cross that was powerfully headed home by Hemmings.

A mix up between Maxwell and Aaron Brown almost presented James Spray with a chance before the ball was cleared for another, this time unproductive, corner.

Malone wasn't too far away with a first-time shot from the edge of the area after Hemmings had squared the ball to him.

Simon Brown held off a Bobo Balde challenge before driving a cross through the six-yard box before Wrexham drew level in the 37th minute through Wes Baynes who drilled a low shot past the outstretched fingers of Carl Ikeme from just outside the area.

The Wolves keeper then made a brilliant point-blank save from Nathan Fairhurst whose effort wouldn't have counted anyway as the flag was raised for offside.

Half-Time: Wrexham 1 Wolves 1

Wolves were back in front inside two minutes of the second-half. James Spray's through ball left Malone in the clear and he buried a low angled shot past substitute keeper Sam Russell.

Spray almost got in on the scoring act himself moments later when he saw off the challenge of Christian Smith before hitting a shot towards the far corner only for Kai Edwards to run back and boot the ball behind.

Malone brushed the base of the far post with a shot from the tightest of angles after he had collected a Hemmings pass, and then Russell saved a Balde header after Danny Batth had nodded back Davis Davis's corner.

Wrexham substitute Jamie Morton, a 15-year-old, had only been on the pitch for a minute when he fired over the bar with only Ikeme to beat after hesitancy in the visiting defence.

With nine minutes remaining Wolves opened up a two goal advantage. Elliott Bennett's shot was deflected over and, from Malone's corner, Jason Shackell powered home a header.
