Halford Double Sees Off Scunthorpe

Posted on: Tue 04 Aug 2009

Scunthorpe United 2 (Hurst 39, McCann 47)

Wolves 4 (Friend 16, Keogh 44, Halford 63, 86)

A second-half double from substitute Greg Halford saw Wolves home after Scunthorpe had twice drawn level in a competitive friendly at Glanford Park.

Manager Mick McCarthy sprang a surprise by naming Academy scholar Nathan Mendez-Laing in his starting line up against the League One team.

Marcus Hahnemann had to paw away a vicious cross-shot from Garry Thompson in the sixth minute whilst home keeper Joe Murphy's first moment of concern came when he gathered Richard Stearman's cross while he was challenged by Sam Vokes and Mendez-Laing.

Wolves moved into a 16th minute lead after a move started and finished by George Friend. He found Andy Keogh with a short pass and when the Irish striker hit a low cross into the box, Vokes knocked the ball back into Friend's path and he hit a shot that was deflected into the net by Marcus Williams.

Midway through the half George Elokobi's formidable frame came to the rescue as he blocked Grant McCann's drive on the line after Paul Hayes had pulled the ball back from the by-line.

Hahnemann had to make a full length diving save to keep out Thompson's shot on the run, and then Friend dispossessed Andrew Wright on the left and raced into the box but no-one was far enough forward to take advantage of his driven cross.

Neill Collins fired straight at Murphy after Keogh knocked back a Mendez-Laing centre, and Hahnemann had to punch clear a Niall Canavan header following McCann's corner.

McCann was narrowly wide with a 25-yrad free-kick that appeared to take a deflection, before United drew level in the 39th minute.Thompson missed Hayes's low cross but Kevan Hurst was waiting at the far post to convert.

But a minute before the break Wolves were back in front after some excellent work from Friend who rode three challenges before slipping a perfect through ball for Keogh who to beat Murphy.

Half-Time: Scunthorpe 1 Wolves 2

It took Scunthorpe less than two minutes of the second-half to equalise once again. Stearman failed to clear and Gary Hooper's centre found McCann who thumped home a rising drive.

Ronald Zubar just managed to poke the ball behind for a corner as Thompson threatened to score a third for The Iron, and from Hurst's corner Canavan headed on to Hooper who was just too high with an overhead kick.

Wolves went 3-2 up in the 63rd minute after a beautifully flighted free-kick from wide on the left by substitute Matt Jarvis was headed home by Halford.

Elokobi ventured upfield and hit a 25-yard shot that substitute keeper Josh Lillis clung onto, and then the full-back provided a low cross that Vokes couldn't reach. The ball ran through to Halford who, from an angle, hit the outside of the post.

Four minutes from time Halford was on the mark again with a terrific 25-yard free-kick that flew into the top corner after Ian Morris had hauled down Keogh.

Just before the end, a Hurst corner was turned goalwards by Adam Boyes. Hahnemann blocked and when the loose ball ran to Michael O'Connor his shot hit the prostrate Boyes and bounced behind.
