Greg Halford today set his sights on establishing both himself and Wolves in the Barclays Premier League after completing a move from Sunderland.

The versatile defender/midfielder has put pen to paper on a three-year-deal - with a further year's option in Wolves' favour - and joined for an undisclosed fee to make it three new recruits in four days following the arrivals of Kevin Doyle and Andrew Surman.

Now sorting out his details back home before flying out to join the team in Australia over the weekend, the 24-year-old is itching to get going.

"I'm really excited about moving down to Wolves," he told WOW after completing the deal.

"It is going to be an exciting season for the club going into the Premier League and hopefully we can push on and establish ourselves in the division.

"Wolves are obviously a big club and the infrastructure is all there.

"There's a great training ground, great stadium and a large fanbase and all the plans are in place for Wolves to really establish themselves."

Chelmsford-born, Greg shot to prominence after coming through the ranks at Colchester United, being named the club's Young Player of the Year in the 2004/05 campaign as well as named in the League One's PFA Team of the Year.

His impressive form in ultimately helping the U's to the Championship secured a move to the Premier League to become Reading's record signing in January, 2007, before another top flight club Sunderland secured his services six months later.

During his time at the Stadium of Light he has enjoyed loan spells with Charlton and Sheffield United, and indeed spent all of last season at Bramall Lane, making 41 appearances and scoring four goals.

His vital goal in the play-off semi final against Preston earned the Blades a place in the final at Wembley where they went on to lose to Burnley.

Almost immediately Wolves lodged their interest, and the determination of boss Mick McCarthy to get his man played a big part in Greg's thinking, along with wanting to prove himself in the top flight.

"I know there has been interest from Wolves for a while and apparently a call went in not long after the play-off final," he said.

"That went a long way to making up my mind to be honest, how keen the manager was to get the deal done.

"It always plays a big part when a manager shows how much he wants you to join and obviously I'd also heard a lot of good things about him from other people.

"Trying to prove myself at the top level is another main reason for the move.

"I thought I did well in the Championship last season but want to do well in the Premier League as well.

"There probably wasn't going to be that chance for me at Sunderland but I'm delighted to take the opportunity of trying with Wolves."

An England-under-20 international, Greg has operated mainly on the right of midfield but possesses the versatility to adopt various positions as well as being something of a long throw specialist.

Although he is only 24, he has made almost 250 senior appearances and scored 34 goals, along similar lines as many young players in the Wolves squad who have already amassed extensive experience.

Greg admits:  "I think I'm probably gone to be one of the oldest in the entire squad!

"There are obviously some very good young players here and the fact there are so many probably helps at one level.

"Players of a similar age have been through the same experiences and also have the same hunger and I think that should stand us in good stead in terms of team spirit."

* Greg is currently back home on Wearside packing his bags in preparation for joining the team tomorrow as they depart for the pre-season tour of Australia.  As such he is set to become the first Wolves player ever to be officially unveiled 'Down Under' at Wolves' training camp on Monday!
