Mick's Delight

Posted on: Wed 01 Jul 2009

Mick McCarthy admitted that he has been keeping tabs on new signing Andrew Surman ever since taking over the manager's seat at Molineux.

The boss was speaking after the former Southampton midfielder had completed his first training session with his new team-mates.

Asked what he thought about the new recruit Mick said: "I'm delighted. I think that we have signed an exceptionally, talented young player.

"I was aware of him when I first came here to Wolves three years ago. I marked him down and have followed and tracked him and now we have signed him.

"He can play wide left or in a centrally left-sided position and he's played at left-back although I don't think he would particularly want to play there.

"I guess if I said to him on a Saturday afternoon 'do you fancy playing left back and nowhere else?' that he might take the shirt on! But he is more of a midfield player.

"He has been one of the Championship's better players and he's still only 22. But he's already played over 150 League games so he's got good experience.

"He's a nice young fellah and he's determined as well and is quite happy with the competition (for places). Being versatile means that there are a number of roles he can play in the team."
