Wolves Win Race For Top International Midfielder

Posted on: Mon 15 Jun 2009

Wolves are delighted to announce the signing of top Serbian international midfielder Nenad Milijaš.

The 26-year-old has agreed to become Wolves' first capture of the summer after joining from Red Star Belgrade for an undisclosed fee.

He has put pen to paper on a four-year contract to join Wolves, subject to receiving a work permit.

Nenad, who stands at 6ft 2in tall, is an established Serbian international who has played a major part in his country's impressive World Cup qualifying campaign for South Africa next year.

He was also named Serbian Superliga Player of the Year last season.

"We're really thrilled to have started our summer recruitment with Nenad Milijaš," said Wolves CEO Jez Moxey.

"Nenad is a star player and an international of some note in what is a very talented Serbian team.

"He scored 18 goals in 34 league games for Red Star Belgrade last season from central midfield and is also a physical presence who can play in a variety of different positions as well as being left-footed which gives the team more balance.

"He's got plenty of experience but also at 26 years old is in the prime of his career.

"This is a big signing for us and we are absolutely delighted with it."

Nenad, born in Belgrade, started his career with FK Zemun before moving to Red Star Belgrade - or Crvena Zvezda - in 2006.

A first team regular, he has made 98 league appearances for the club scoring 37 goals mainly in central midfield but also on the left hand side.

Last season he was the club's top scorer with 18 goals.

Regarded as a dead ball specialist he was named Serbian Superliga Player of the Year for the 2008/09 season as well as being named in the league's All Star Team.

He has previously helped Belgrade to the league title in 2006 and 2007 as well as winning the Serbian Cup in the same years.

Nenad has secured numerous international honours, initially with the Serbian under-21 team which reached the semi finals of the 2006 European Championships in Portugal.

He has since made 10 appearances for the senior Serbian team, most recently in the two World Cup qualifying wins over Austria - in which he scored a penalty - and the Faroe Islands.

Indeed Serbia are currently in a good position to qualify for next year's tournament in South Africa as they lead Group Seven by eight points from France, who have two games in hand.

Little wonder then that clubs from across Europe were keen to try and recruit the midfielder when Red Star Belgrade agreed to sell.

"Several other clubs were interested and we've seen documentary evidence to show that," added Jez.

"We spoke to Red Star and agreed a fee which will remain undisclosed.

"Mick has seen him two or three times, Terry Connor has seen him two or three times and our scouts in Serbia have watched him a lot and spoken to him on several occasions.

"He's always been very positive about joining Wolves which is a great sign.

"When he arrived here and we showed him around the training ground and Molineux he was saying this was where he wanted to be.

"He's a great athlete who passed the medical with flying colours. We then negotiated the contract which was straight forward.

"He's also a real leader, a captain-type, and the all-round signs are extremely positive."

"We've been looking very closely across Europe for the last year.

"As a club we've never been afraid to bring in foreign players and Nenad fits this bill of a very talented one at that."

The deal is still subject to a successful application for a work permit, a process which Wolves are starting immediately.

Jez explained: "The deal is still subject to obtaining a work permit because Serbia is outside the EU.

"We are going to make a quite detailed application because he doesn't quite fulfil the criteria so it will probably go to appeal.

"But he has been a regular in Serbia's senior international team for the last season as well as being a key member of the under-21 set-up before that.

"He's also been captain of Red Star Belgrade which is a club renowned for its successes both at home and in European competitions.

"We will be submitting the application in the next day or so."

* Nenad's first interview as a Wolves player will appear on WOW shortly.
