Mick's Pride At Championship Title

Posted on: Sat 25 Apr 2009

Mick McCarthy tonight revealed his "huge sense of satisfaction" after Wolves clinched the Championship title with a draw at Barnsley - but urged fans to stay off the pitch next weekend to ensure the players and supporters can enjoy the occasion together.

Kyel Reid's late equaliser secured the point Wolves needed to win their first title for 20 years, but the celebrations were marred after fans stormed onto the pitch both after the equaliser and at full time.

The invasion meant both Mick and his players were unable to savour the success of their labours and had to quickly run up the tunnel and sit in the dressing room instead.

And the manager is now urging Wolves fans to stay in the seats after next Sunday's final game of the season with Doncaster to ensure the squad and supporters can celebrate together.

"I wasn't very happy with the pitch invasion," said Mick.

"It's only taken a slight gloss off it because we've still won the Championship but it would be nice to celebrate without being mobbed.

"It's fantastic to see 6,000 of our fans here and I understand them wanting to come and party.

"But it would be lovely to go and applaud them at the end but instead we can't and have to scarper off up the tunnel and sit in the dressing room.

"Let's hope we are allowed to celebrate next Sunday.

"It doesn't completely tarnish what has been a wonderful achievement from the players who have worked so hard all season.

"But they don't want to be mobbed and have their shirts ripped off and be slapped on the back, it's really uncomfortable.

"The players want to show their appreciation to the fans who have been terrific all season.

"So let's all celebrate together because if they do come on we'll all be off up the tunnel and off - we won't be going in the Directors Box.

"The players want to go around the pitch with all their families and enjoy it."

On the game itself Mick admitted it wasn't one of Wolves' better performances, not least because it was difficult to motivate a team who have already achieved their season's aim.

"We didn't play particularly well today and Barnsley wanted and needed it more but we've eked out another result," he added.

"We were pretty ordinary but it is difficult to motivate players and is a difficult task.

"They stuck at it as they have all season.

"The players have had their foot right to the floor for 44 games and knew they were more than likely to win the Championship whatever happened.

"I don't have the magic formula to motivate them and we did all the things right and prepared properly but it's still difficult."

Now though, with the title assured, Wolves can relax ahead of bringing the curtain down on their Championship campaign against mid-table Doncaster on Sunday.

"It's a huge sense of satisfaction not to go into next Sunday's game needing to avoid defeat or whatever to clinch it.

"We've won the Championship with a game to spare and can go out and enjoy it.

"What better could we have wished for at the start of the season?"
