Fans Creating Terrace Anthem
Hundreds of Wolves fans have used the power of the Internet to collaborate on a new terrace anthem. Tired of not having a 'You'll Never Walk Alone' type song to sing on matchdays, a group of fans have set up a temporary website called www.wolvesfans.org.
Supporters have been swapping lyrics, suggesting ideas and generating support for the plan. The closing date is Sunday, 5th April 2009 at 12:00pm and fans are being encouraged to get voting! The aim is to have a song ready for the home game against QPR on 18th April 2009.
The temporary website will close down in a few weeks time.
The club is reacting to the overwhelming support for a terrace anthem by committing to play the chosen tune on match days between now and the end of the season, which will enable fans to sing along with their own lyrics.
In addition the club is planning to produce Gold & Black coloured cards for fans to hold up as the team runs out against QPR. The club plans to print the lyrics of the song on the back of these cards. Wolves will also print the lyrics in the official matchday magazine.
Tim King, one of the fans behind the initiative, said: "We came up with an idea to get a unique, spine-tingling Wolves terrace anthem going, which would make the fans feel even prouder of the club we support, if that's at all possible!
"We know we've got some great terrace songs for all the players past and new, but we wanted a real club anthem in the 'You'll Never Walk Alone' mould, that stirs up our own true passion we have for Wolves to push the players to promotion and beyond.
"Something that we can sing that lasts a little longer than the words 'Hi Ho Wolverhampton', which could continue to be sung by the fans even though the music would be turned down after the whistle is blown for kickoff.
"I'm sure this would then stop that little lull of support in the first 5 minutes and encourage more support straight from the off to help our players settle into the game quicker.
"We wanted to say thanks for all the fan's support throughout all the online community forums and their efforts so far in helping us try and create something a little bit special.
"We're not after any personal recognition or glory, that's all for the players, management and fans as a whole, but the aim always has been (and we want to stress this), that the anthem will have ultimately been written by one of the fans and then voted for by as many fans as possible to get the majority Molineux consensus."
Matt Grayson, Head of Marketing & Communications, Wolves, said: "Every football fan knows that for a terrace song to be successful, it has to come from the fans.
"We're absolutely delighted to help the hundreds of supporters who have worked on this anthem idea.
"Everyone at the club really appreciates the time and effort that has been put in by so many supporters."
