"A Great Honour"

Posted on: Mon 30 Mar 2009

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake today described his Football League awards double as a "great honour" - while admitting the biggest prize is still out there to be won.

The Wolves striker enjoyed a particularly happy 23rd birthday yesterday as he was named FourFourTwo Championship Player of the Year and picked up the Mitre Goal of the Year accolade for his stunning individual effort at Charlton last season.

Ironically last night's awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel came a year to the day since he struck that superb second goal at The Valley.

Unfortunately Sylvan was unable to attend last night's 2009 awards dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel due to the calf injury picked up on England-under-21 duty.

But he was understandably delighted with the awards, which were voted for by a combination of fans, fellow players and managers.

"I'm delighted with the Player of the Year award, it's a great honour," he said.

"It's a recognition of what I've done over the year in the Championship and what I've done since arriving at Wolves.

"But it's also testament to what we've done as a squad this year, not just me.

"It's only down to my team-mates that I've been able to produce the form that I have.

"And to get the Goal of the Year as well just tops it off.

"I'd just like to thank everyone who's voted and been involved in helping me to win the award.

"Recognition from your peers is always something that's particularly special.

"We're all working in the same job and if someone appreciates what you are doing on the same level it's a respect thing which is nice to hear.

"I'm delighted with the award and hope to kick on and continue my good form.

"I'm just disappointed I wasn't able to go down personally to collect the award but would obviously also like to thank the Football League."

Amid his pleasure at the notable double Sylvan also acknowledged that there is still plenty of work to be done.

Namely in trying to round off an excellent year by helping Wolves to promotion.

"Having won Goal of Year as well and still being in the running for the Golden Boot so far it's been a very good year," he added.

"But the most important one is still out there.

"Getting promoted and Wolves winning the title is what I'd like more than anything.

"Picking up the individual accolades is great but without getting too greedy it's the promotion that we all really want.

"There are still six games remaining and a lot can change in that time so we need to stay focused.

"If we win our games we can control what we do and hopefully that will get us there."

Sylvan has netted 36 goals in 58 appearances since arriving from Plymouth 14 months ago.

And that has made boss Mick McCarthy delighted with his efforts since swooping to sign him.

"Over the last 12 months Sylvan has contributed over 30 goals for us," said Mick.

"Ever since he arrived he has made a huge impact on the place and long may he continue to do so."
