Collins Hails Ipswich Display
Neill Collins today declared Wolves' first half performance at Ipswich as one of the best he's been involved with in his time at the club.
The versatile defender produced a kingpin performance alongside Richard Stearman in the heart of the defence as the Molineux men snuffed out Ipswich to not only take three valuable points but also chalk up their first clean sheet of the season.
And mixed with that defensive solidity saw some excellent attacking play which could have brought more goals than the two provided by Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Dave Edwards.
"Every Championship game is tight, no matter how well you do for spells," said Neill of the 2-0 win.
"But our first-half performance was one of the best performances I've been part of at Wolves and it was nice for it to come together.
"It was a joy to play in but we shouldn't forget about all the hard work and that started with Chris Iwelumo and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake up front.
"We really made it hard for them to play and then that allowed us to play.
"It wasn't a case of going there and trying to play fancy football - we had to do the hard stuff first and the rest followed.
"We knew they would come out reorganised and re-vitalised and that's what happened but we managed to weather that storm and get the second goal.
"We could have pushed on and got more because they went down to 10 men and they were trying to push forward.
"So to win comfortably 2-0 is very pleasing."
Of course the cloud to Wolves' silver lining was the loss of George Elokobi to injury which saw Neill once again deployed out of position at left back for the game's final half-an-hour.
George will tomorrow undergo a scan on the injury which will bring a spell on the sidelines leaving Neill happy to fill in if required.
"George is almost irreplaceable with the physique he's got, but at the same time you have to look at it as being a chance for someone else," Neill added.
"It's so disappointing because George's attitude and application have been excellent.
"No one like to see anyone get injured so we all wish him a speedy recovery.
"We're never going to go the whole season needing just 16 players - we're going to need 20 players and that's been proved already in the first couple of weeks.
"If anyone's asked to play a different position they'll do it because we all want to play well for Wolves and hopefully take this club places.
"It doesn't really bother me where I play.
"I'd prefer to play centre-back, but we had a lot of clean sheets last season when I played left-back and if we can keep more clean sheets this season with the goal threat we have, it's a recipe for success.
"If George isn't available the manager has options with myself, Daniel Jones, Stephen Ward and Michael Gray, who can all play there.
"He can use the transfer window so there are plenty of options but if I have to play there, he knows I will."
