Mick Reveals Changes For Accrington

Posted on: Mon 11 Aug 2008

Mick McCarthy today revealed he will give some of his squad members a chance in tomorrow night's Carling Cup tie with Accrington Stanley.

But they will all be fully-fledged senior professionals as the boss is taking nothing for granted for the visit of the League Two outfit.

Mick is ready to pick from the same squad of 20 that travelled to Plymouth for Saturday's opening Championship game of the season, while Darren Potter might also come into the equation as David Jones has a slight hip/back injury.

Like David, Michael Kightly is unlikely to train today and is also a doubt for tomorrow with a sore ankle.

"Kights has a bit of a sore ankle and David has a problem with his hip and back," said Mick.

"It's nothing major but they didn't train yesterday and probably won't today.

"If they are not fit then it's 100 per cent they won't play.

"As to the team I'll see what happens today but there might be chances for others to get a game.

"And that's not to say it will be untried young players.

"We had our usual Old-Versus-Young game in training last week and Kights was on the Old team at 22 - he was distraught!

"I'll pick mainly from the players that travelled on Saturday and people like Dave Edwards, Micky Gray, Matt Jarvis, Sam Vokes and Chris Iwelumo will get a game.

"Potts might also be involved but there won't be any major surprises - it will still be a first team squad.

"It's an opportunity for people to get a game but these are not untried young players we are talking about taking a chance on."

Darren Potter was made available for transfer at the end of last season, and has since suffered a virus, but Mick has praised his attitude having now returned to training.

"Potts has been brilliant in training, he's done really well," he added.

"He's on the list but if he doesn't go anywhere it wouldn't break my heart.

"He's a great lad around the place and I know he can play first team football.

"That's a conversation I'll be having with Potts but he's been terrific and has just got on with things.

"I expect that from him because of the character he is."
