Mick McCarthy has praised Michael Gray for the exemplary run of form that has helped revive Wolves' play-off challenge.

The experienced utility man has scored three times in a month - his first goal for six seasons - to emerge as one of the key players in the club's bid for a top-six place.

"He's full of energy and enthusiasm, and, at 33 or whatever he is, an example to the younger players," Mick said on the eve of tomorrow's important home game against QPR.

"His enthusiasm is still what it was at 23, it's remarkable. He's a good footballer?.going forward is always something he has loved to do, even when he was playing at left-back.

"He and George (Elokobi) have formed a good relationship for us down the left. We have good balance there and having Mickey in he team also gives us good experience."

Michael's last goal prior to his current rush with Wolves was in Sunderland's 1-1 draw at Bolton in October, 2002.

He has recently netted in three victories - away to Crystal Palace and Burnley and at home to Scunthorpe on Tuesday.

Mick, meanwhile, has explained his decision to take off another midfielder, Darren Potter, in the first half of the midweek victory.

"It was a tactical decision and Matt Jarvis went on in his place and made an impact straightaway," the manager added.

"I had a chat with Potts afterwards, as I always would with a player in that situation, but sometimes your words fall on stony ground at a time like that."
