A Stiff Work Out At Edgar Street

Posted on: Fri 03 Aug 2007

Hereford United 2 (Robinson 2, Ainsworth 9)

Wolves 3 (Bennett 5, Bothroyd 36, Jones 69)

Wolves were given a stiff work out by League Two Hereford United with the Molineux team twice having to come from behind before snatching victory with a Daniel Jones header.

The game got off to a frenetic start with three goals coming in the opening nne minutes.

It took Hereford just 90 seconds to move into the lead. Gareth Ainsworth crossed from the right and Theo Robinson climbed to power a header past Wayne Hennessey.

Three minutes later Wolves were level with Jay Bothroyd holding off a defender to turn and cross for Elliott Bennett to nod home the equaliser.

But the Bulls quickly regained the advantage when Ainsworth smashed home a close range shot after a cross from Steve Guinan had fallen to him.

Wolves were struggling to put their game together although Bothroyd was unlucky with an angled shot that hit a defender and bounced behind.

But the striker spurned a good opportunity by firing over from 10-yards after Mark Little had cut into the area and squared the ball.

Daniel Jones almost levelled matters when he shot across the face of the Hereford goal but his effort hit the inside of the far post and bounced clear.

Then Freddy Eastwood was just off target with a drive that took a slight deflection before it drifted wide.

With 33 minutes gone a quickly taken free-kick from Bothroyd was threaded through to Stephen Gleeson who was denied by United keeper Scott Brown at close range. The loose ball ran to Jones but his goalbound shot was blocked by Dean Beckwith.

The pressure finally told nine minutes before the break when Brown failed to gather a free-kick from Bennett and Bothroyd rammed the ball into the net from just six-yards out.

Shortly afterwards Eastwood glanced a header over following a cross from Jones.

Half-Time: Hereford 2 Wolves 2

Five minutes after the restart Gleeson hit a tremendous volley from 20-yards that flew into Brown's arms. Within a minute the keeper had to race from his area to clear from the same player.

Hennessey was then called into action when he turned away a Robinson header following a free-kick from Guinan to the right of the Wolves box.

Eastwood was wide with a shot from the edge of the area after Bothroyd had pulled the ball back before Wolves moved into the lead for the first time with 69 minutes gone.

Jones was the scorer with a header that Brown got his hands to but couldn't keep out after Karl Henry had curled a cross in from the right.

A minute later Bothroyd almost grabbed a fourth with a shot from 25-yards that was only just wide.

In the dying minutes substitutes Jemal Johnson and Liam Hughes both had shots that were blocked at the expense of unproductive corners.
