Plymouth Argyle 2 (Fallon 7, Seip 55)

Wolves 2 (Kightly 19, Vokes 78)

Substitute Sam Vokes, on the field for just a minute, rescued a point for Wolves in the season's opener at Plymouth.

But the Molineux side could claim, with some justification despite twice having to come from behind, that but for Graham Stack in the Argyle goal all three points could have been in the bag by the time the youngster marked his full debut with a goal.

Stack spent a lengthy spell on loan at Molineux last season. Also in the home line-up was former Wolves youth striker Jermaine Easter.

The new campaign began with some very unseasonable weather - heavy rain driving across Home Park.

Plymouth kicked-off attacking the away end of the ground that was packed with over two and a half thousand travelling supporters.

Inside the first minute Richard Stearman, who with David Jones, was making his senior debut for Wolves, was adjudged to have fouled Easter 22-yards out. Simon Walton took the free-kick but his effort bounced to safety off the defensive wall.

But Plymouth got Wolves' season off to the worst possible start by taking a seventh minute lead. Jody Craddock and Rory Fallon chased a long clearance and, with Wayne Hennessey having left his line, the home striker lifted the ball over the keeper and into the net.

Plymouth threatened again when Craddock fouled Easter to the right of the Wolves area. Luke Summerfield's free-kick was cleared to the far side where this time Michael Kightly was ruled to have pushed Mathias Kouo-Doumbe. Summerfield again took the free-kick with Stearman clearing for a corner.

Kightly was booked for a challenge on Chris Clark but the Molineux favourite was all smiles in the 19th minute as he pulled Wolves level. Kevin Foley lofted a cross over from the right and the unmarked Kightly jumped acrobatically to steer the ball home with his right foot (pictured).

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who hadn't received the warmest of welcomes on his return to Home Park, gave the home fans a reminder of his power as he muscled his way clear of a challenge and drove the ball narrowly over the bar from 25-yards.

A Summerfield free-kick from a similar distance at the other end forced a full length save from Hennessey who turned the ball behind. Then a long-range chip from Jones beat Stack but was a matter of inches too high.

Five minutes before the break Ebanks-Blake was hauled down by Kouo-Doumbe and Kightly's curling free-kick saw Stack at his best as he threw himself sideways to punch the ball away.

Half-Time: Plymouth 1 Wolves 1

Stack plucked a short cross from Ebanks-Blake out of the air after a good build up involving Andy Keogh, Foley and Jones then, in the 54th minute, the keeper took the ball off Ebanks-Blake's feet after he had run onto Kightly's through pass.

A minute later Plymouth regained the advantage. Hennessey turned over a fierce drive from Jamie Mackie but when the visiting defence failed to clear Clark's corner, Marcel Seip forced the ball home from six-yards out.

Seip was booked for fouling Kightly on the edge of the box in the 61st minute. Henry teed the free-kick up for Jones but his shot was deflected behind for a corner. From Kightly's flag-kick there was a tremendous scramble in the home goalmouth before Kouo-Doumbe finally booted the ball upfield.

Stack just got his hands to a Kightly chip after the winger had jinked his way through the Plymouth defence before Mick McCarthy made a double switch with Matt Jarvis and Chris Iwelumo replacing Stephen Ward and Keogh respectively.

Stack performed heroics for his side once again when he tipped over a 30-yard free-kick after Krisztian Timar had pushed Iwelumo. From Kightly's corner, Ebanks-Blake turned Iwelumo's flick back into the goalmouth where Stack somehow managed to block George Elokobi's goalbound shot.

Still the Plymouth defence couldn't clear their lines and this time Stack thwarted Iwelumo who hit a low shot from 12-yards that the keeper smothered.

Stack again frustrated the Wolves' supporters behind his goal when he got down low to push Ebanks-Blake's close range shot round the post after Kightly had run the length of the pitch before delivering a low cross.

The Argyle goal was leading a charmed life and when Kightly centred, after playing a short corner to Jones, Stack turned aside Elokobi's header. The full-back retrieved the ball and turned and shot only to see his second effort deflected behind for a corner.

Again Kightly and Jones combined before crossing and again Elokobi powered in only for his header to hit a defender and go behind.

The goal that Wolves so richly deserved finally arrived in the 78th minute. Vokes, who had only been on the field for a minute, played a one-two with Iwelumo before steering the ball past Stack who, for once, could do nothing.

Wolves piled on the pressure in the closing stages but Plymouth went close to grabbing a late winner when substitute Jason Puncheon drove narrowly wide. It would have been an injustice on Wolves had the ball gone in.
