Wolves 1 (Olofinjana 57)

Cardiff City 2 (Chopra 27, Byrne 88))

Once again Wolves were made to pay for a host of missed chances as a late goal from Cardiff substitute Jason Byrne condemned Mick McCarthy's men to their fourth home defeat of the season.

Earlier Seyi Olofinjana, with his fifth goal of the campaign, had cancelled out Michael Chopra's first-half opener.

On loan defender Craig Fleming made his debut and Michael Kightly came back into the starting line-up whilst new signing Stephen Ward and youth team captain Lee Collins were both named as substitutes. Dropping out of the team that beat Oldham in midweek were Rohan Ricketts and the suspended Gary Breen.

City kicked-off attacking the South Bank end and an early chance fell to Chopra who fired wide from just 10-yards.

Craig Davies took a return pass from Michael McIndoe and hit an angled shot that Cardiff keeper Neil Alexander saved with his legs at the expense of a corner. Kightly's flag-kick was only half cleared to Mark Little whose lob back into the danger area deceived Alexander and struck the bar before being booted clear.

Davies found the back of the Cardiff net in the 11th minute but his effort was ruled out. He charged down an Alexander clearance but was penalised for a second challenge on the keeper as the pair vied for the loose ball.

Then Kightly cut in from the right into the City area and checked inside his marker before squaring the ball to Davies who shot over the bar from 15-yards.

Kightly featured again when he broke from just inside the Cardiff half but, with a defender snapping at his heals, the defender fired wide.

Cardiff took the lead with 27 minutes gone when Chopra took a pass from Joe Ledley and chipped the ball over Matt Murray from 20-yards.

There was a chance for Wolves when Darren Potter was fouled 20-yards from goal in a central position but Kightly's free-kick went straight over the defensive wall and into the arms of Alexander.

Play was held up shortly before the break when a freak gust of wind blew advertising hoardings onto the pitch. Stewards quickly laid flat all of the boards surrounding the playing area.

Kightly set up the chance of an equaliser for Olofinjana but after the midfielder had controlled the ball he swivelled and shot over the bar.

In stoppage time Davies headed over following a centre from Little.

Half-Time: Wolves 0 Cardiff 1

CC Both sides had chances in the opening minutes of the second period. Murray got his body behind a well struck drive from Chopra before Olofinjana looked certain to level matters when he ran on to Little's low cross only for Stephen McPhail to block from two-yards out.

But Cardiff were still posing threats of their own and Murray made a great tackle outside his area as Chopra took advantage of a lucky bounce to race clear of Neill Collins' challenge. Seconds later Chopra beat the Wolves keeper but his shot smacked against the post and bounced clear.

Peter Whittingham was booked for kicking the ball away after being given offside, before Olofinjana thumped a shot against the post after he had homed in on Little's cross from the right.

The equaliser that Wolves deserved arrived in the 57th minute. Kightly's surging run took him into the City area and when the ball broke to Davies he returned it low into the six-yard box where Olofinjana was on hand to turn it home (top picture).

The home side now had their tails up and McIndoe looked good to convert a low Kightly cross but the ball took a slight deflection just before it reached him and then was cleared.

Kightly was in the thick of things and Alexander dived to save his header after a Jamie Clapham centre. Then the keeper took a back header from Davies after McIndoe had supplied the cross.

Luck was against Wolves, and Davies in particular, in the 77th minute when the striker ran in from the left and hit a shot that struck the base of the post. The ball bounced to Kightly but Alexander spread himself to block.

Davies left the field to a tremendous ovation ten minutes before the end when he was replaced by Ward and, after Paul Parry had headed narrowly over following McPhail's free-kick, Jemal Johnson came on for McIndoe.

Two minutes from time Byrne, a cousin of Robbie Keane, stunned Molineux when he converted Chopra's cross from six-yards out. Chopra had run in to the Wolves area and although Murray managed to force him wide, the City man was able to square the ball to Byrne who scored with ease.
