Plymouth Argyle 2 (Aljofree 9, Ince-og 79)
Wolves 0
A 2-0 defeat at Plymouth coupled with Preston's victory at Coventry put a severe dent in Wolves' hopes of a place in the play-offs. Glenn Hoddle's men were well beaten by an Argyle team that had failed to score in their previous four games.
With Lee Naylor having failed a morning fitness test, 19-year-old Wordsley born Daniel Jones came in for his senior debut.
Jody Craddock returned in place of the injured Gabor Gyepes and the other three changes to the Wolves starting line up saw Mark Kennedy, Maurice Ross and Carl Cort coming in for Rohan Ricketts, Rob Edwards and Tomasz Frankowski respectively.
Wolves kicked-off defending the end of the ground that held a contingent of around 2,000 Molineux fans. And the early action was focussed at that end with Stefan Postma forced into an acrobatic save with less than two minutes gone.
David Norris crossed from the right and Vincent Pericard's full blooded shot was brilliantly turned aside by the keeper who then grabbed hold of the loose ball.
Nick Chadwick wastefully scooped a shot over the bar following another cross from Norris before Argyle moved into a ninth minute lead.
Tony Capaldi's corner, the first of the game, was played back to the edge of the box where Hasney Aljofree ran in to crash home a low shot past the helpless Postma.
Lilian Nalis fouled Mark Davies 30-yards out from the home goal in a central position but when Paul Ince floated the ball into the area, Paul Wotton headed clear.
Another Capaldi corner caused more problems for the visitors with Craddock fouling Mathias Kouo-Doumbe right on the 18-yard line as he attempted to clear. Wotton's free-kick went through the wall and inches wide of the right-hand post.
Davies was booked for a foul on Wotton who then went into the book himself presumably for something he said to the referee.
Ince's shot in the 24th minute was deflected behind for Wolves' first corner of the game but Miller's kick was cleared. Then Pericard missed a fine chance of extending his side's lead when he shot wildly across the face of goal with only Postma to beat.
Plymouth were enjoying much the larger share of the attacking play and, after the second of two consecutive Capaldi corners, Wotton headed just
over the bar.
Jeremie Aliadiere nodded down a Kenny Miller cross into the path of Ince whose shot was parried by home keeper Romain Larrieu.
Miller was then booked for the tenth time in the campaign incurring a two match ban after he was adjudged to have raised his arms in shielding the ball from Capaldi.
As the interval approached Cort was robbed by a defender as he tried to work a shooting angle after a Miller centre, and Aliadiere's shot was charged down after the Frenchman had cut into the Plymouth box.
But it took more good work from Postma to prevent further damage when he parried a snapshot from Norris. The ball hit Chadwick and bounced behind but he was stood in an offside position.
Half-Time: Plymouth 1 Wolves 0
Jones was pushed forward at the start of the new half with Kennedy dropping back into defence.
Within seconds of the restart Postma was scrambling on the floor taking the ball off the feet of Pericard and then the keeper had to be at his best to
push out an angled shot from the Plymouth man.
Ince was wide with a header from Jones' deep cross, and then the Wolves skipper got in a tangle with Miller in a free-kick routine after Aliadiere had been fouled by Capaldi outside the home box. Wotton wasn't far off with a low shot after Kennedy had headed out a centre.
Edwards replaced Jones after 63 minutes but Plymouth continued to press and after Postma had punched out a fierce shot from Wotton, Norris was narrowly wide of the far post with a drive that went through the six-yard box.
Miller planted a 25-yards free-kick straight into the arms of Larrieu and, a minute later, the Scot was replaced by Frankowski with Ricketts coming on for Ross at the same time.
With 11 minutes remaining Ince, in attempting to clear a Capaldi free-kick, ran in at the near post and succeeded only in heading powerfully into his own net.
Aliadiere became the third Wolves man to be shown the yellow card after he fouled Lee Hodges and Larrieu made a rare save when he dived to collect a deflected shot from Ince.
