Marlon Off The Mark

Posted on: Tue 31 Mar 2009

Marlon Harewood scored his first goal in Wolves' colours as a strong side enjoyed a 4-1 victory against Shrewsbury Town in a friendly at Compton Park this afternoon.

The first chance of the game fell to Kyel Reid who fired narrowly wide but it took a fine save from Shane Higgs to prevent The Shrews from taking a 26th minute lead.

Higgs deflected a Stephen Leslie shot away with his legs and then, moments later, he made a superb reflex save to turn away a header from one of the two triallists that Shrewsbury were fielding.

Harewood was only just wide of the far post with a shot on the turn and when the on loan striker played a one-two with Reid he set up George Friend whose effort was blocked by Town keeper Jasbir Singh.

In the 39th minute Wolves moved ahead. Harewood used his speed and strength to beat off two challenges on a run down the right wing before he delivered a low cross.

Singh parried Michael Kightly's close range shot but the loose ball ran to Friend who scored with a low drive from the edge of the area.

Kightly, who had fallen at the side of the goal, needed treatment before he was helped back to the medical room as the game resumed.

Shortly before the break Nick Chadwick wasn't far away from an equaliser with an angled shot.

Graham Stack, an interval substitute for Higgs, was quickly off his line to block from Chadwick who had broken clear before Wolves went two up in the 52nd minute.

Friend hit an inch perfect lofted pass into the path of Harewood who toe poked the ball past the advancing Singh.

After Harewood had almost grabbed a second as he fired inches wide, Town pulled a goal back when one of their triallists beat the offside trap and lashed the ball past Stack.

But Reid restored Wanderers two goal advantage in the 64th minute with a cracking goal. He unleashed a dipping shot from 25-yards out that beat Singh all ends up.

Two minutes later Ashley Hemmings was fouled in a goalmouth scramble and Reid sent Singh the wrong was from the spot.

In the closing stages, Hemmings skied a shot over the bar and James Davis was thwarted by Singh as Wolves finished the game well on top.

Wolves: Higgs (Stack 45), Little (Craddock 45), Ward (Hill 45), Collins, Stearman, Henry (Jones 45), Reid, Quashie (J. Davis 61), Harewood (Simon 55), Kightly (Hemmings 39), Friend.
