Friendly Fightback

Posted on: Tue 24 Feb 2009

Four goals in a 15 minute spell saw a Wolves X1 complete a remarkable comeback when they faced Derby County in a behind closed doors friendly this afternoon.

In the game, played at County's Moor Farm Training Centre, the home side took a three goal advantage before Wanderers hit back in style.

After Dave Jones had seen his free-kick tipped around the post by home keeper Ross Atkins, Stephen Gleeson went close with a shot on the run that just missed the post.

But Derby moved into a 26th minute lead when Paris Simmons cut in from the left and scored with a low shot that went in off the inside of the far post.

Then, on the half-hour mark, Tito Villa lobbed home a second from just inside the area.

Ten minutes before the break Vokes almost pulled one back but his powerful header was turned over the bar by Atkins.

The Rams went three up five minutes after the resumption when Luke Varney's corner was eventually scrambled home by Nathan Ellington.

But midway through the half the comeback began when, after good work by George Friend, Sam Winnall crossed for Vokes to glance home a header

Winnall was also involved in Wolves' second goal in the 76th minute when he found Kyle Bennett who forced the ball into the net.

Two minutes later some good interplay between Gleeson and Bennett opened up an opportunity for Chris Iwelumo who converted from close range to level matters.

In the 83rd minute, Winnall completed the scoring when he ran in from the left and beat Atkins from 12-yards with a well placed shot.

Wolves: Woolley, Melbourne (capt), Hill (Little 21) (Batth 85), Collins, Friend, Gleeson, Simon, Jones (Dunleavy 70), Vokes (Bennett 70), Iwelumo, Winnall.
