Cameron Visits Wolves Project
Conservative party leader David Cameron paid a visit to Wolves Football in the Community's award winning Dusk, Twilight and Midnight Leagues at Castle High School, Dudley where he met some of the 9 - 11 year olds at risk who are joining in the 40 week soccer/educational programme funded by West Midlands Police.
The Leader of the Opposition was in the area and accepted an invitation to get a first hand view of Wolves' highly regarded community project at work. He joined in one of the football sessions and spoke to Wolves community coaches.
The club devised and developed the innovative Dusk, Twilight, and Midnight Leagues for youngsters at risk in areas of deprivation. This initiative was awarded the Government's Sports Match Community Award in 2001.
The social inclusion project seeks to provide a safe, fun and friendly environment in which children can participate in football coaching skills-plus equally importantly games and workshops relating to drug and alcohol awareness, anti-social behaviour, personal health and hygiene and career advice. The project provides the youngsters with somewhere to go, in their spare time -rather than being on the streets.
Dusk League targets 6-7year olds, Twilight Leagues 8-10 year olds and Midnight League teenagers and up to the age of 21. Links with local independent organisations offer the youngsters - boys and girls - a private, confidential drop in centre and 24 hour toll free help up line dealing with all forms of health and personal problems.
